Marketing the Diving Emergency Management Provider (DEMP) Course

What is it? Single, comprehensive program –Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries –First Aid for Hazardous Marine Life Injuries –Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) for Scuba Diving –(Optional) Advanced Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries

What is it? Diving Emergency Management Provider: Is an integrated presentation of skills and knowledge Combines all programs Offers realistic scenarios for actual dive accidents

What makes it work? Remove redundant skills and information Skills and information sequenced to build on each other Students learn how to work together –Later skills grasped quicker as students understand their roles

Who can teach DEMP? Any DAN Instructor or Instructor Trainer certified to conduct the three main programs –Advanced Oxygen is optional Instructors or Trainers lacking certifications must obtain training prior to promoting the program

Who can take DEMP? Any diver interested in the program is eligible –Current CPR certification required Dive leaders and Instructors –Anyone with a duty to care for others

How do I teach it? No special Instructor materials required –Download outline from website –Use existing materials –Present lectures –Conduct skill training as outlined

How do I teach it? Instructor CD is available –Two disc set –Includes: Edited versions of all videos Edited versions of slide presentations Cannot be used to teach stand- alone provider courses

How do I teach it? Student handbook includes all four sections Cost $32 US Includes: –student provider card and wall certificate –Registration and exam pages for all four sections

Using the Outline

Program Introduction –Introduce program and DAN –Present skills demonstration for Scene Safety Assessment and Basic Life Support skills –Conduct skills practice

Using the Outline AED segment –Present Knowledge Development (Slides or video) –Conduct skills as outlined CPR Review Using an AED Equipment Maintenance –Administer assessment

Using the Outline Oxygen Provider segment –Present Knowledge Development (Slides or video) –Conduct skills as outlined Equipment Identification Demand Valve Non-rebreather mask Rescue breathing with supplemental oxygen –Two Injured Divers scenario incorporated at end of the program –Administer assessment

Using the Outline Treat each segment identically After completing all knowledge and skills segments, have students work together as a team dealing with scenarios Create scenarios that use multiple programs in the same rescue Keep realistic, but make challenging

Pricing Time commitment Equipment required –Oxygen Kit and Oxygen –AED Trainer Unit –First aid supplies –MTV-100 and Bag Valve Mask (Optional) –Student Handbook

Course Organization Options Present as a one day program Break it up into pieces Offer with BLSPRO as a professional-level dive first aid weekend Upgrade other DAN Providers

One Day Program Present the complete program according to the outline Conduct all knowledge development, skills development and assessments Conduct scenario practice at the end of the program Issue program certifications Downside: 8-hour time commitment

Break it up Offer each segment over successive nights Provides greater scheduling options Keep segments close together Downside: lose benefit of having students work together

Professional skills weekend Offer along with BLSPRO Add in REMO 2 as well Presents high-end skills appropriate for dive professionals High perceived value of skills and knowledge Downside: large time commitment and program cost

Upgrade other providers Not necessary for current DAN Providers in other programs to repeat that segment Purchase DEMP book and standalone certificate for Providers in one program For Providers in two or more programs, might be easier to purchase last stand- alone books and the certification card

Promoting it Promote the program to dive leaders – divemasters, AIs and DiveCons –Market the professional-level approach –Will be patches of all icons available soon, including DEMP Make it part of Rescue-type classes Offer with other CPR/FA programs

Promoting it Create off-season “Prepared Buddy” series “Safe Traveler” – offer as a special for divers taking dive trip –Integrate in a Fish ID to go along with the HMLI segment –Both of these get divers into your store

DAN’s Promotion Using website and Alert Diver to promote course to DAN Members Instructors and Instructor Trainers capable of conducting the course designated on Online Instructor list with red star beside name
