What is child labor? Child labor is done by any working child who is under the age specified by law. The word, “work” means full time commercial work to sustain self or add to the family income. Child labor is a hazard to a Child’s mental, physical, social, educational, emotional and spiritual development. Broadly any child who is employed in activities to feed self and family is being subjected to “child labor’.

Causes of child labour Absence of compulsory education at the primary level, parental ignorance regarding the bad effects of child labor, the ineffictivity of child labor laws in terms of implementation, non availability and non accessibility of schools, boring and unpractical school curriculum and cheap child labor are some other factors which encourages the phenomenon of child labor. Parents are forced to send little children into hazardous jobs for reasons of survival, even when they know it is wrong. Monetary constraints and the need for food, shelter and clothing drives their children in the trap of premature labor. Over population in some regions creates paucity of resources. When there are limited means and more mouths to feed children are driven to commercial activities and not provided for their development needs. Illiterate and ignorant parents do not understand the need for wholesome proper physical, cognitive and emotional development of their child. They are themselves uneducated and unexposed, so they don’t realize the importance of education for their children.

Impacts of child labor on society: It is one of the most inhumane activity in the society. As money comes to the hand of the children at very small age so they don’t know the proper use of money and uses the money improperly which afterwards becomes a threat for his life also. As a result they lack proper education and they get married soon and the same thing continues for generations over. Due to having an attraction to money at such age they always move behind the money and one day they become the terrorists and create instability in the society.

Survey of the locality 82 miles market: Head of the family: Total family members: Total no. of educated members: Total no. of children under the age of 14 years: Total no. of children working for wages: Working willingly or not: Family condition: Average educational qualification of children: Parents present or expired: Parent’s educational qualification (if present):

Student’s Participation All of us (team members) went to the local market and we conducted a survey on the first day of starting of our project. And we found that most of the children working in the sweet shops for a very less amount of wage are of age below 14 years. On the second day we went to each and every shop where we identified children are working of age less than 14 years and interacted with them. From the interaction we found that the children are having interest to go school and study but due to the financial circumstances and some other irrelevant causes they are bound to do the work.

On the third day we went to their house to interact with their parents (who had) and from there we found that the main cause making their child bound to do work are: Lack of basic knowledge. Financial difficulty. Large family members and as a result the children don’t get much care. Some children become out of control of their parents as a result of bad company because when the children were small they could not take care of them and thus the children become addicted to many bad things and to fulfill their need of money they start working.

On the fourth day we along with our teachers conducted a seminar to create awareness in the locality about the need of primary or basic education for the children. On the seminar the following topics were discussed: Importance of education to children. Modernisation of society through education. Govt. steps and policies to give children at least basic education and the facilities provided by the local self govt. (panchyati raj.) Govt. laws or acts against child labour.

Response of the local peoples After the seminars and interactions were conducted the local peoples very actively showed their response. The first indication of their response is that almost 80% of the peoples were present in the seminar. The second indication is that the children whom we found working some of them were no more seen working in the sweet shops after that. A committee was also made from the local educated peoples who actively and voluntarily came forward to work against child labor. Some of the parents started working hard and trying their level best to keep their children to study.

Techniques used for solving the problem and creating public awareness Motivation is the first and foremost technique to solve social problems. So first, we tried to motivate the local uneducated peoples. We also tried to solve the problem by speaking with the parents about how can they income themselves without destroying their childrens life. At last we were putting some real examples in front of those uneducated peoples how really the childrens life is being destroyed because of parents mistake in adopting child labour, and how some educated poor peoples are fighting with their own life to make their children educated.
