DOUBLE NEGATIVES GRAMMAR RULE BREANNA LOFTON

Content: English Grade: 4 th Grade Summary: The purpose of this instructional power point is to allow students to understand when they have used a double negative in a sentence. It also helps with their grammar. Learning Objective: Given a sentence that contains a double negative, the students will be able to accurately create a substitution sentence that could be used instead. Content Standard: Enhanced speaking and sentence forming Accomplishment: Understand the wrong use of words in sentence and determine the correct use.

GRAMMAR THE CORRECT WAY A basic correct sentence contains a subject a and verb. Lacking one or the other may turn the sentence into a fragment, a run-on sentence, and lack of subject-verb agreement. Using incorrect words may even turn your sentence into a double negative sentence.

HERE’S A TEST ! Which would be the best way to state this sentence? I don’t want nothing. A.I do not want nothing.I do not want nothing. B.I don’t want something.I don’t want something. C.I no need nothing.I no need nothing. D.I want something.I want something.

INCORRECT! THIS SENTENCE IS INCORRECT BECAUSE IT LACKS THE PROPER STRUCTURE FOR A SENTENCE.

OOPS! HERE’S WHERE YOU WENT WRONG THIS SENTENCE IS WRONG. JUST BECAUSE YOU BREAK THE CONTRACTION, DOES NOT MEAN THE SENTENCE IS CORRECT.

TRY AGAIN …. NOPE.. TRY AGAIN. THINK OF HOW THIS SENTENCE WOULD SOUND. THE FIRST STEP IN CORRECT GRAMMAR IS ENGLISH ITSELF.

CORRECT! YES! YOU GOT IT. THAT IS THE BEST WAY TO WRITE OR STATE THIS SENTENCE.

ROUND 2 ? You’re doing the exact same thing you did in the exercise before. Let’s give it a go! I don’t have no money. A.I have no money.I have no money. B.I do not have no money.I do not have no money C.I don’t have any money.I don’t have any money. D.I have a few money.I have a few money.

THAAAAAT’S RIGHT! YES! THAT’S RIGHT! KEEP IT UP.

DID YOU KNOW FACTS *Double Negatives are correct in some languages, but in English, it is grammatically incorrect.

CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO ! =B56PCydFY44

IN CONCLUSION…. The students accurately determined the correct sentence that did not contain a double negative. It should be a success in living life knowing you are speaking correctly! GOOD JOB !
