KATYRA MARTIN Measuring Volume

Content Area: Mathematics Grade Level: 3 rd Grade Summary: The purpose of this instructional PowerPoint is to give students the opportunity to practice measuring volume. Learning Objective: Given various graduated cylinders, the students will be able to measure the water inside with 100% accuracy. Content Standard: Solve problems involving measurement and estimation. Accomplishment: Create an understanding of measuring volume.

Important Vocabulary Volume: the amount of space an object takes up Graduated cylinder: a tall, narrow container that is used to measure volume Meniscus: the curved surface of liquid in a container Milliliter: a unit of volume equal to one- thousandth of a liter.

Rules for Measuring Volume in a Graduated Cylinder 1. Place your graduated cylinder on a flat surface. 2. Get at eye-level with the graduated cylinder. 3.Read the bottom of the meniscus. DO NOT READ THE TOP OF THE WATER!!! YOUR MEASUREMENT WILL BE WRONG! Lastly, include your unit. The unit for all these problems will be milliliters (mL).

Example There are 5 lines between each interval. This means that each line means 2. The meniscus is at the 4 th line between 30 and 40. The volume of this water is 38mL

Problem 1 ! Hint: The lines only represent 1 this time. A) 21.5mL 21.5mL B) 23mL23mL C) 17mL17mL

Correct ! 21.5 mL is correct. Good Job !

Problem 2 ! A) 26mL26mL B) 21mL21mL C) 24mL24mL

Correct ! 24 mL is correct. Keep up the good work!

Vocab Review 1. What is the curved surface of a liquid in a container? A) Milliliter Milliliter B) Volume Volume C) Meniscus Meniscus

Correct ! Way to go! Meniscus is correct.

Vocab Review 2. Volume is …..? A) A thin container used to measure liquid A thin container used to measure liquid B) The amount of space an object takes up The amount of space an object takes up

Correct ! Good Job ! Keep up the good work!

Conclusion You have learned how to correctly measure volume in a graduated cylinder. You have practiced measuring volume in a graduated cylinder. Lastly, you have learned some important vocabulary to help you measure volume. Below is a link to a volume game so you can get more practice !!! http://www.bgfl.org/bgfl/custom/resources_ftp/client_ftp/ks2/maths/measures /index.htm

Incorrect ! This is not the correct answer. Click the arrow to try again.
