mOcean Volleyball Club Parent Meeting: November 5th 2012

Club Introductions Josh Rohlfing – Club Director Adam Wagman – Assistant Club Director Club Coaches consist of current and former SOU players and high school coaches

What mOcean offers Highest level coaching in Southern Oregon and Northern California Experience and success at all levels of coaching, Middle School to College Coaches with high level of playing experience Resources for all coaches in the club to improve their skills and knowledge base A proven history: More than 30 athletes that have been members of mOcean or the Southern Oregon Volleyball Club competed on college rosters during the last decade and currently there are 16 athletes on college rosters.

What will your Daughter get from club? Improve their overall volleyball skills Improve their knowledge about the game of volleyball Have targeted instruction to improve the skills they are interested in learning (skill specific training) Make new friends that share a common interest Have an opportunity to travel and play clubs from across the west coast

Club Philosophy We are dedicated to developing volleyball athletes throughout Southern Oregon and Northern California through a commitment to: – Highly skilled coaching – Dedication to player development – Ability to work with athletes at all skill levels – Responsive to parent and team desires

Club Philosophy: Player Development We focus on the big picture when working with athletes and look to develop a whole player (based on position) who can have success in the short term, while not sacrificing the future. – Learn Offensive and Defensive Systems – Teach skills that focus on doing it “the right way” – Being part of a team

Club Philosophy: Playing Time There are two conflicting school of thoughts that we attempt to balance (all playing time is contingent upon athletes attending practices, and having a positive work ethic) – All athletes need to have court time to have the opportunity to develop as a player. All athletes will have time on the court during pool play – Athletes who are better should get more time on the court and others should work to earn time on the court During Bracket play, the athletes that will enable the team to win, will be given more playing time.

Club Philosophy: Parent and Athlete Concerns This is the expected communication chain – Athlete talks with coach – Athlete and Parent talk with coach – Parents Share concern with Club Directors Other Items – Talks with coaches need to be scheduled – Will not occur without 24 hour notice

What needs to be complete for Tryouts Submit a Tryout Reservation Form (online) Complete mOcean Tryout Form Athletes need to be registered with AAU Sports. The Cost is $14. If you have already registered for another sport for this year, you can simply add Volleyball. Pay a $15 tryout fee. This will be paid at Tryouts. Cash only.

What Local Team Includes 4- 5 tournaments (Held Ashland – Grants Pass Area) 1 -2 practices a week (Held in Ashland – Central Point Area) Uniform: Jersey and Spandex Coaching from a single coach for the duration of the season (some extenuating circumstances may arise but will be rare)

Season Length Local: – Practices will begin the first week in January – Tournaments will start in mid-January – Season will run until mid-March – Last tournament will be the 2 nd weekend of March

Club Costs Costs cover: – Tryout and Evaluation Registration cost – Uniforms – Team Registration – Training Costs (Coaching and Coaching related materials) – Registration for tournaments – Tournament sanctioning – Facility usage – Equipment – Gym Insurance – Administrative costs

Club Costs Club costs that are paid to the club are one-time payments. There are no extra costs that will be taken by the club at a later date. The club cost of $375 needs to be paid after an athlete is offered a position on a team. Families will be notified of their team placement and will have a week to make payment to ensure their spot. Information regarding this process will be included when you have made a team.

Practices Times for practices can vary widely, but the club works to set certain limits. – Practices will not start earlier than an hour before the end of athletes’ school day. – Also practices will not run later than 9:00. Typical practices times are 6:00-8:00 and 7:00-9:00 during weekdays and afternoons on weekends. Practice times will vary in length depending on age. – Athletes on teams below 14U will practice about 1:30 – Older athletes will have practices that run in length between 1:45 and 2:15. The days will vary with an attempt to avoid late on Friday and Saturday nights and early on Sunday mornings.

Practices All will be done to minimize the impact of practice location and time, however there can be no guarantees made about practice location and times. Limited gym space can lead to situations where athletes will be asked to practice in a city different than the one in which they live. Parents should plan for club season as if they will never have the opportunity to practice in their home city.

Local Tournaments Tournaments will typically begin in the early a.m., (between 8:00-9:00), and run the majority of the day (ending at sometime between 3:00-7:00.) They can be on either Saturday or Sunday. Athletes are expected to stay for the duration of the tournament and expected to stay and complete all team duties: this usually includes officiating after the team has finished playing. Athletes need to stay at the facility and eat at the site.

Tryout Information 5th-7th Grade: November 11th at Southern Oregon University Gym from 1:30-3:30 8th Grade: November 11th at Southern Oregon University Gym from 4:00-6:00

Number of Teams We are waiting to determine the number of team – There be fewer spots than athletes who tryout – At least 1 per level: 12U, 13U, and 14U – Goal is 10 Athletes per team – Goal is competitive teams Rationale – Limited resources of club (coaches, gyms) – Parent concerns regarding low-level teams – Focus on Quality over Quantity

Tryout Process Evaluations will be based on: – Skill – Position – Knowledge of game – Athleticism – Attitude and Coachability
