DEFINING DEVELOPMENT Economic Development – has been broadly defined as growth in total GDP and Per Capita GDP (volume and value of goods and services) Social Development – defined as improvements in well-being of people and societies – people centred. Development o Encompasses economic and social development. o In addition it covers political development, governance, organizational development etc. Uganda Bureau of Statistics Website: 2

MEASURING SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT Because of complex nature of social development, its measurement is equally complex – composite indices used. Indices of “well-Being” and “Happiness” have been tried but the latter not very widely used. Focus on some factors that directly impact welfare of individuals and societies have been used as proxy for social development. Uganda Bureau of Statistics Website: 3
