Unit 2: Length, Area and Volume Chapter 3 in workbook

In Canada and most countries, we use the SI (Systeme International) system of measurement aka: The metric system eg) litre, meter, gram Measurement

 USA and the UK use the imperial system eg) inch, mile, pound Measurement

Conversion between imperial units is different from metric conversions. Conversion Units 1 foot12 inches 1 yard3 feet 1 yard36 inches 1 mile1760 yards

Example 1) Convert 47 inches to feet. We have to know how to convert between imperial units:

Example 2) Convert 2.7 miles to yards.

a) 1.6 feet to inches b) 493 yards to feet c) 322 feet to yards Now you try!

Example 3) Convert 1.2 miles to inches Two conversions…

Convert inches to miles. You try!

Worksheets Homework

Now that you know how to convert between imperial units, we will learn how to convert between SI and imperial units. SI and Imperial

SIImperial 2.54 cm1 inch 0.3 meters1 foot 0.9 meters1 yard 1.6 km1 mile On your charts…

Convert 75 cm to inches. Example 1:

Convert 26.1 miles to km. Example 2:

a)73 yards to meters b)4.9 km to miles c)1200 miles to km Try these:

Convert 4.3 km to yards. Two conversions:

Then, homework: pg. 134 # 4-9 Try and hand in the practice problem.

Surface Area Calculations

the total area of all the faces or surfaces, of a three dimensional object; measured in square units Example: Surface area would be the total area of the cardboard in a kleenex box What is surface area?

net – a two-dimensional pattern used to construct three-dimensional shapes

Volume

 The amount of space an object occupies (units cubed) Volume

Alfred has a bulk container that holds 2000 cubic inches of dog biscuits. He plans to sell the biscuits in small boxes that measure 5” by 8” by 6”. How many boxes will he need to sell all the dog biscuits? Example 1

 The maximum amount that a container can hold Capacity

Paula is opening a bakery. All her recipes are given in metric units, but she has imperial measuring devices. The crème brulèe recipe requires 500 mL of cream and 1.25 mL of vanilla. Example:

a) How much cream will she need, in cups?

b) How much vanilla will she need, in teaspoons?

c) How much cream will she need, in fluid ounces?

 In the United States, temperature is measured in degrees Fahrenheit  In Canada and most of the world, temperature is measured in degrees Celsius Temperature

 C = 5/9 (F – 32) Example: Convert 47F to Celsius From Fahrenheit to Celsius

Convert the following from Fahrenheit to Celsius: a)325 F b) 53 F c) -29 F Examples

 F = C(9/5) + 32 Example: Convert 23C to Fahrenheit Celsius to Fahrenheit

Convert the following from Fahrenheit to Celsius: a)32 C b)423 C c)-25 C Celsius to Fahrenheit

 Try converting -40F to Celsius. What do you notice? Convert:
