Music Appreciation-Lesson 1 Music Theatre Terms

Where did Theater Start? Theater began in Ancient Greece around 4000 B.C. People used to tell stories to honor their God’s The God the Ancient Greeks mainly honored was Dionysus, the Greek god of Wine, madness, and theater.

Ancient Greeks Early Theater was performed on an amphitheater stage, that seated well over 10,000 people. The main problem was that people who sat all the way in the back row could not see or hear the story from their seat.

Ancient Greeks Cont. In order to fix this problem, the Greeks built 2 Large basic masks that told the audience if a character was happy or sad. Since then, the masks have become the international symbol of all theater, and have been the two main categories of theater……

Comedy and Tragedy

Since Then…… Theater has taken on many different additions and styles. Presently, the most popular style of theater is Music Theater. Music Theater is a story that integrates songs and dances into the plot.

What is a Play? Let’s Discuss……What is a Play in it’s most basic form? A Play is simply…..a Story!

How Can a Play be Changed into a Musical? Mostly what composers do is take a story, and enhance it by adding music. However, there are 3 main rules that must be followed when a story is being adapted to a musical. 1.The Story MUST gain something besides Music 2.The Plot MUST move forward 3.The Characters MUST be deeply defined through their songs and dances.

Types of Songs Cont. Money Song: ◦ Is a song that is written just to make money $$$$$$$$$$$$ Example: T6u7Q T6u7Q
