Welcome to Club Golf at The Bishopbriggs Golf Club These slides give you a reminder of the key points from the lessons we will have over the next ten weeks in club golf.. They are only a guide for you to look at. You need to practice them if you want to get better.

Club Golf Lesson 1 Key things to remember about Putting Make sure the face of your putter is aiming straight at the hole. Take the putter face straight back and follow straight through when you stroke the ball – don’t stop when you make contact with the ball. For an easy grip – use baseball approach with your thumbs on top of the putter grip.

Club Golf Lesson 1 Key things to remember about Putting Remember how a railway track looks. Your feet should be pointing in the same direction as the face of your putter – all in Iine to the target. Stand straight up, hold your putter out with straight arms, then tilt forward till your club touches the ground, and relax your knees a little. Take a little step to the left and then one to the right. The ball should be in the middle of your feet and you should be looking straight down at the ball. Now make that putt and remember to go through the routine when you putt!

Club Golf Lesson 2 Key things about Chipping The main things we said about putting are also the same in chipping. Aiming the clubface, how you address the ball and how you line up your body. The difference is you are looking for the ball to be in the air for about 33% of the distance you want it to go and running along the ground the rest of the time. So for a 15 metre chip to the pin – 5 metres in the air and 10 metres along the ground. Chipping is a low running shot so the ball doesn’t need to go high.

Club Golf Lesson 2 Key things about Chipping Putt when you can, chip when you can’t putt and pitch the ball only when you have to. Its easier to hit a low running shot than a high pitch from a short distance. Get the feeling of hearing your club brush the grass when you play a chip. Keep your body still when playing a chip. Don’t make a big body turn. Keep your shot nice and smooth – you don’t need a lot of effort to hit a chip. It’s like putting but with a loft on the club.

Club Golf Lesson 3 The first part of full swing Make sure your grip, stance and the way you line up are correct before you do anything! Feet about shoulder width apart, arms straight out as you hold the club. Tilt the back forwards, pop your knees slightly, then drop your arms so they are straight. They shouldn’t be bent when you address the ball.

Club Golf Lesson 3 The first part of full swing When you take the club back - short back swing – The club shaft is on line with the target. – The toe of the club points to the sky – Often your club shaft will come back inside the target line so watch out for this When you swing through – short through swing – The club shaft is still on line with the target – The toe of your club points to the sky.

Club golf lesson 4 and 5 The full swing continued On your backswing, when you take the club back to create an L shape with your arm your – weight transfers to the back foot and your – back faces the target

Club golf lesson 4 and 5 The full swing continued On your throughswing, when you hit the ball the following happens. – Weight transfers to the front foot. – Tummy now faces the target – The heel of your right foot will be off the ground and your right knee will be touching the left knee – (other way round for left handed players)

Club golf lesson 4 and 5 The full swing continued On your through swing you must also remember to finish the swing off. Don’t try to stop it half way up the swing

Bunker play This is the only time you don’t hit the ball! Think of your ball lying in the middle of a £10 note. You have to get your club to take away the £10 note area of sand out of the bunker. As the sand flies out, your ball will come out too.

Bunker play You do need to put some effort into these shots as the sand will give you resistance against the club when you hit it. Your swing is more u shaped and you need to break your wrists as your club hits the sand so you need to take a good backswing when in the bunker. As with everything, practice makes perfect!

Pitching Taking up the correct grip and body stance, this time the ball will be in the middle of your stance. Your hands should also be a little in front of the ball. You need to use your wrists a little more in pitching so think about this when you strike the ball. This makes sure you that at impact, you are hitting down on the ball. This is what makes the ball go up in the air.

On the Course Remember to play safely. Think about where you are in relation to other players. Enjoy yourself but remember to respect other people who are playing with you or near you. Think about your bag position when you approach the green so you can move on to the next tee quickly and avoid slow play. Mark the card when you get to the next tee and make sure you do it after every hole. You need to mark someone else’s card in a medal. You can’t mark your own. You need to sign it as the marker and the other person has to sign it as the player for it to be accepted as a medal card. Finally, enjoy your golf!!
