Reading Maps  Content Area: Social Studies  Grade Level: 1 st grade  The purpose of this instructional PowerPoint is to show the students how to recognize basic map symbols to be able to read a map.  Given images of maps and instructional links, students will be able to identify shapes of Tennessee in the United States and the Americas on maps and globes with 90% accuracy.  TN Social Studies State Standard 1.17 Identify the shapes of Tennessee and the United States on maps and globes.  ISTE Standard: 3. Research and information fluency Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. a. Plan strategies to guide inquiry b. Map Outlines  Look at the first picture, it shows the shape of the United States.  Now look at the second picture, it shows the shape of Tennessee.  Can you find that shape in the outline of the United States?
