OVERVIEW  Examine sports in secondary schools in Canada and the United States  Examine sports at the intercollegiate level  What does the future hold for sports?

INTRODUCTION  Organized sport tied closely to __________in the______, _____________ and ____________  However, very few secondary schools outside of these areas sponsor and fund interschool sport  Organized sport for adolescents and young adults in most developed countries are_________ ________.  These community based programs are funded by ___________and _________ sources.

INTERSCHOLASTIC SPORT  Interscholastic: ___________________________  In Canada, we have three levels of competition: 1. Interschool sports- between _____________- governed by Canadian School Sport Federation and ten provincial athletic associations 2. Intercollegiate sports- between __________________and _________- governed by CCAA and five regional conferences 3. Interuniversity sports-_______________- governed by the CIS and four regional conferences

COMPARISON BETWEEN INTERSCHOLASTIC SPORTS IN CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES  While there are similarities between the two, the significant difference is based on a question of scale.  In many parts of the U.S., high school football and basketball (males) are seen as a significant development system for the U.S. collegiate system. There are full time coaches for these sports- this does not occur in Canada

COMPARISON BETWEEN INTERSCHOLASTIC SPORTS IN CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES  Canadian schools seem to offer a greater diversity of sports and a less intense level of competition.  There is an even greater difference between the two countries when it comes to inter university sports.  Division 1 programs in the United States attract much attention in Canada  There is more similarity between NAIA and CIS programs. These NAIA schools are smaller and many of them located along the U.S/Canada border.

INTERSCHOOL SPORTS AND THE EXPERIENCES OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS  Question: Do interschool sports affect educational and developmental experiences of high school students?  Quantitative research on this issue-uses _______________________________  Qualitative research- use ____________________________________

INTERSCHOOL SPORTS AND THE EXPERIENCES OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS  Studies have consistently shown that high school athletes, as a group, GENERALLY have _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ than those who did not play high school sports.

INTERSCHOOL SPORTS AND THE EXPERIENCES OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS  In some cases, the difference has been modest and is difficult to separate from other factors i.e. social class, support from friends and family, identity issues, etc.

SPORTS IN THE FUTURE ____________________________- will continue to be highly visible- these sports are based on the idea that excellence is proved through competitive success and achieved through hard work, dedication and a willingness to take risks. _____________________________– physical activities in which participants value freedom and personal connections- they generally emphasize enjoyment, growth, good health and support for others, including opponents.- focus on personal empowerment.

SPORTS IN THE FUTURE  It is likely that power and performance sports will grow faster than pleasure and participation sports  However, future developments in all sports will be influenced by technology, the media and consumerism.  There is a concern for health and fitness, given the rising incidence of obesity.  Other considerations: the environment, aging population, women in sport, alternative sports, disabilities

USING SOCIAL THEORIES TO CREATE FUTURES _______________________ – Eliminating problems i.e. controlling cheating, promoting fairness BUT keep the culture and structure of sports the way they are (radical strategy) _______________________– transform organization of society so that class difference fades away- no reason to exploit or oppress people (radical strategy)

USING SOCIAL THEORIES TO CREATE FUTURES  ___________________– eliminating inequities- efforts to redistribute power and give voices to those who previously did not have them (radical strategy)  ___________________– transforming sport so that women are not systematically disadvantaged (radical strategy)  ____________________– creating sports that include everyone, not just the “subculture” (radical strategy).
