What is Strategic Planning? ► Strategic planning is a tool used to help any organization - including academic departments - do a better job  Teaching and student learning; research and scholarly activity; service  Managing personnel and resources ► A process to help all members of the organization focus on the same goals

Strategic Planning and Long-Range Planning ► Should be based on long-range vision  Department, College, University ► Strategic plan helps guide your department over the next year or two  May be for longer time frame but usually one to two years  Also helps you determine if you got to where it is you want to go

Strategic Planning and Long-Range Planning ► Long-range planning assumes reliability and stability of current knowledge in meeting long-range goals ► Strategic planning assumes your department must respond to changeability and unpredictability ► How will your department best use its resources in a changing environment?
