What is Functional Maths? Level 1/2

We face lots of maths problems every day – some simple, some not so simple. Here are some examples. Every day maths

The temperature yesterday was 4 degrees. The weather… What will the temperature be tomorrow? 4 – 8 = Weather experts say the temperature will drop by 8 degrees overnight. ? -4

You and your three friends decide to go and watch a new movie in 3D. Going to the cinema… Tickets cost £7.50 each or a group ticket for up to four is £25. Which tickets would be the cheapest? Tickets £7.50 each or 4 for £25 £7.50 x 4 = Group ticket = £25 ? £30

You and your three friends decide to go an watch a new movie in 3D. Going to the cinema… You buy two drinks and three tubs of popcorn. Drink £1.99 each Popcorn £1.42 each What is the total cost for your trip? Tickets £7.50 each or 4 for £25 Ticket s (2 x £1.99) = (3 x £1.42) = £25 Drinks Popcorn Total = £3.98 £4.26 (group) = ? ? ? ? £33.24

Time… The film starts at 19:45 and lasts for 90 minutes. You have to be home by 21:30, do you have enough time to watch the film? 19: minutes = ? 21:15

Your dinner will take 25 minutes to cook. Time… You put the food in at 21:15. What time will your dinner be ready? 21: minutes =21:50 ?

Time… What time train would you need to catch from Long Road to be at the Ice Skating Rink before 08:30?

Measuring… This is a table of equivalent imperial and metric lengths: ImperialMetric 1 inch2.54 cm 1 foot12 inches m 1 yard3 foot m 1 mile1760 yards km How wide is this in m? A cricket pitch is 50 yards wide m x 50 = ? 45.72m

Understanding and using whole and negative numbers. What will you learn?
