“Trinity” & Holy Spirit “Define, describe, explain the Holy Trinity” “How does the Holy Spirit work in us today?”

“The Holy Trinity” 1.When we use the phrase “trinity” it generally refers to: God the Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit. 2.Catholicism and off-shoots have a defined doctrine with much history. Tertullian (c. 220 AD) “the one trinity consists of three persons of one substance” Arius (c. 306) began teaching God created Jesus.

One God but Three? 1.Old Testament hints: Genesis 1:26, 3:22, 11:7 Deuteronomy 6:4 Isaiah 6:8 “Spirit of God” Gen. 1:2, 6:3; 1 Sam. 16:13-14, Ps. 51:11, Isaiah 34:16 “The Lord?” Gen. 18:1-2, but 19:1?

One God but Three? 2.New Testament hints: Jesus’ ascension: Mt. 28:19 Fullness of Deity in Jesus: Col. 2:9 Jesus as the Word: John 1:1-4, 18 Body as temple of the Holy Spirit: 1 Cor. 6:19 Body of Christ: 1 Cor. 12:4-6, 11-13, 18 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit…,” Qeothto$ (theoteitos): “deity i. e. the state of being God, Godhead: (Lucian, Icar. 9; Plutarch, de defect. orac. 10, p. 415 c.) Which Is It? “For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body” v. 13 “But now God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired” v. 18 “But one and the same Spirit works all these things…just as He wills” v. 11

Summary: 1.The notion of a Godhead or a “plural-oneness” of God runs the course of Scripture (cf. Rev. 22:17) 2.Scripture does not address the “how” of the Godhead. 3.God seems to manifest Himself as The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

How does the Holy Spirit work in us today? If the Holy Spirit is God, then He can do anything He desires just as the Father and Son can do. But, I can only know how God acts if He chooses to communicate His actions. Therefore, I can only know how the Spirit works from what I read in Scripture. “…for all things are possible with God.” (Mark 10:27, NASU)
