1.Define ‘environmental sustainability’ and identify its characteristics. 2.Look at the strengths and weaknesses of attempts to achieve environmental sustainability in Papua New Guinea.

Sustainable Development? DEFINE

“Environmental sustainability involves making decisions and taking action that are in the interests of protecting the natural world, with particular emphasis on preserving the capability of the environment (to support human life) for future generations”.

What would an environmentally sustainable place look like? Find an image using Google Images or similar. Annotate with the features that make it ‘environmentally sustainable’. Protects biodiversity Reduces human caused climate change Eliminates acid rain Eliminates damage to ozone layer Reduces pollution Manages resources (physical, energy, biological) You should be able to name a location for each of these; will be easier after Section 4!

How would we know if ‘environmental sustainability’ had been achieved somewhere? What are the judgement criteria to evaluate its success? What methods to achieve environmental sustainability would be in place?
