General Navigation The following navigation is reviewed in this presentation: Home page Issue table of contents Article abstract Full-text article 2

The journal’s cover image links to the current issue’s Table of Contents Quick access to the current issue can be gained by using the hyperlinks to the right of the cover image. “Month-Year” links to that issue’s Table of Contents “Vol.” links to a page displaying that volume (Past Issues) “No.” links to issue’s Table of Contents “Full Table of Contents” links to that issue’s TOC. Basic Navigation: Home Page Options

4 Links to pricing page Links to meeting abstracts on the ADSA site The navigation panel allows quick access to full journal content and journal information as well as to the ADSA site. Main navigation opens to a drop- down menu of relevant links. This navigation panel appears on all pages on Basic Navigation: Navigational Bar The journal title functions as the Home button

5 These “action” buttons allow users to sign up for alerts, see a trial issue, or review the Journal’s user guide. The center content sections allow users to quickly access featured articles and issue highlights. Links take users to either the article abstract or the full-text, based on the user’s access settings. Basic Navigation: Home Page Options Graphics allow users to link to these sites. This tabbed list allows users to read about the journal and about ADSA, with links in each section to more information. The center tabbed list allows users to view  Most Read articles. This list shows the most popular articles on the journal site over the past quarter. Options allow users to view abstract, full text, or PDF. Applicable journal entitlements apply.  Most Cited articles.

6 JDS Access section provides users with information and links to Log in at the ADSA site for ADSA members JDS User Guide on claiming access Claim access to the journal Basic Navigation: Home Page Options This links user to journal on SciVerse/ScienceDirect. Link added to ensure institutional subscribers can access the Journal of Dairy Science This link opens to display sharing options that users can personalize or configure. Graphics allow users to link to these sites. Text and logos within Publication Information link as follows:  Elsevier. Links to main site (  FASS and ADSA. Link to the respective websites of these organizations

7 Basic Navigation: Home Page Options These links provide information about Elsevier: privacy policy, site terms of use, help guide, and contacts for assistance/questions and feedback.

8 Basic Navigation: Current Issue Table of Contents Allows search of this specific issue. Users can check the abstract(s) of interest and display or the article, add the article to a reading list, or export the citations. Links allow navigation to abstract, full text, PDF, and supplementary materials (if available). Article title links to abstract. Preview feature, when clicked, shows first few lines of article abstract. Long groups of author names will show “et al.” and allows users to expand the list and then hide it Users can click here to sign up to receive the issue table of contents via or RSS feed. Tabbed access allows users to see tables of contents of past issues and supplements.

9 Basic Navigation: Past Issues Navigation of Table of Contents of any past issue is identical to that of Current Issue. The Past Issues tab allows users to easily access legacy content by filtering by decade, year, and issue. Selections are chosen for each filter from drop-down menus.

10 Basic Navigation: Supplements Navigation of Table of Contents of any Supplement is identical to that of Current Issue. The Supplements tab allows users to easily access supplement content by filtering by decade, year, and issue. Selections are chosen for each filter from drop-down menus.

11 Basic Navigation: Article Abstract Clicking on a keyword invokes a journal-wide search on that word. This links user to this article abstract on SciVerse/ScienceDirect. Link added to ensure institutional subscribers can access JDS. Clicking on an author’s name allows a platform- wide search for that name. can be sent to corresponding author by clicking on the envelope icon. Mousing over the author name opens a window that gives the author’s affiliation, as shown below. Intra-article navigation allows users to navigate to the previous or next article in the issue. Volume and Issue links return user to that issue’s Table of Contents. Tabbed access allows users to navigate to different article formats (full text and PDF) and to specific components of the article. See next slide. At the abstract level, users are provided the following options:  Log in (if already registered)  Register  Pay to view this article (must register first)  Subscribe  Claim access (for a subscriber who has not yet accessed online content)  Access via ScienceDirect

12 Basic Navigation: Article Tools Toolkit at right appears on all abstract and full-text pages and includes the following: Download images. Download images from the article into a MS PowerPoint slide deck. Abstract. Send this article abstract and the article citation info to a colleague. Add to My Reading List. Add this article to user’s reading list (part of My Account) Rights/Permissions. Request permission to use the content of this article. Request Reprints. Request reprints of the article. Related Articles. Search (platform-wide) on this article content. Cited in Scopus. Provides a link to Scopus and a count of citations registered in Scopus. Export Citation. Export the article citation info in RIS format (for ProCite, EndNote, Reference Manager) or in ASCII text. Create Citation Alert. Sign up to receive an alert by when this article is cited. Image Usage & Resolution. Details on resolution and terms of agreement regarding use of images. This link opens to display sharing options that users can personalize or configure.

13 Basic Navigation: Full-Text Article Article outline is dynamically generated for a full-text article by the headings included within the article; each heading links to the respective section in the full- text view Same basic functionality discussed on Slide #11 (article abstract) applies here. Additional functionality described In full-text view, intra-article navigation appears at the top and bottom of the article.

14 Basic Navigation: Full-Text Article References References within the full-text article will open inline to allow user access to this content (and all included links) without having to scroll to the reference list or to the References tab at the top of the article top

15 Basic Navigation: Full-Text Article Figures/Images Figures within the full-text article can be opened as larger images in a new window or downloaded to Microsoft PowerPoint.

16 Basic Navigation: Full-Text Article Images Tab Figures included in the full-text article can also be viewed as a gallery or collection via the “Images” tab. User can click to view a larger image in a new window or download image(s) to Microsoft PowerPoint.
