Open Ocean Courtney Wood Period 3 Also known as: Pelagic Zone!

Example of Biome Open Ocean or Pelagic Zone

Location of Biome The open ocean is located passed the coastal waters. It is the deeper areas of the ocean Anchors away!

Physical Characteristics Temperature: 0° to 40° C Salinity: 35 parts per thousand Depth: The depth varies between 200 to 11,000 meters. Water Flow: There are warm ocean currents Here fishy, fishy, fishy!

Base of Food Web Phytoplankton are the base of the food web. The zooplankton eat the phytoplankton. The larger organisms eat the zooplankton. Fish are friends, not food.

Animals Fish Whales Sharks Squid Dolphins Plankton Swordfish Krill Cuttlefish

Zones Epipelagic Zone: 200 meters deep Mesopelagic Zone: 200 to 1000 meters Bathypelagic Zone: 1000 to 4000 meters Abyssopelagic Zone: 4000 to 6000 meters Hadopelagic Zone: greater than 6000 meters Just keep swimming!

Fun Facts Tsunamis are only 12 inches high in the open ocean! Ocean Acidification takes place here! The deeper you go the colder it gets! The deeper you go the less light there is! Brrrrr! I wish I had fur!
