The Lord’s Prayer

At the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught his disciples seven requests commonly known as the Lord’s Prayer. The Our Father Prayer Our Father who art in Heaven, Hallowed be thy name; Thy kingdom come Thy will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses As we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. Amen

Locate The Lord’s Prayer in: Matthew 6: 9-14 AND Luke 11:1-4 Write down the version that is most like the one we use liturgically. Write down the two forms of prayer that appear in this prayer. (The answer is on the next slide.)

In The Lord’s Prayer, Jesus uses two prayer forms: Adoration and Petition Adoration “Hallowed by thy name”- This demonstrates the respect Jesus shows for God the Father, and instructs us in the reverence we should have for God.

Petition *** There are seven petitions found in The Lord’s prayer… list two.**** “Thy kingdom come” Jesus is asking (petitioning) His Father to help bring about the love and justice humans need to have for one another on the Earth.

“Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven” Jesus recognizes that His Father has a plan for human beings and is asking God the Father to help bring about this overall plan for humanity.

“Give us this day our daily bread” Bread refers to two things in this petition. 1. It literally refers to food. Jesus is asking that human beings have enough to eat for their physical requirements. 2. Jesus refers to Himself. Jesus calls himself “the Bread of Life” (John 6:35.) Jesus hopes that human beings will accept the Gospel He gave to then so that they will not suffer spiritual hunger.

“Forgive us our trespasses” In the Lord’s Prayer, tresspass refers to sin or wrong actions we have committed. Jesus is quite simply asking Father to forgive the wrongs we have done.

“As we forgive those who trespass against us” Jesus is telling us we need to remember that forgiveness has two parts. If we expect to be forgiven, we need to remember that we need to forgive others their wrongdoings. This is known as the “unity of forgiveness.”

“And lead us not into temptation” We recognize that we have free will to choose our actions. Jesus wants us to ask God to assist us in not taking the way that leads to sin or wrong decisions that harm others and ourselves.

“But deliver us from evil”” This petition acknowledges the presence of evil in our world. Christians, when praying this part of the Lord’s Prayer, ask God to help them be delivered from the Evil One, as well to be freed from all evils, past and present.

Journal Entry Describe a solution for world hunger. OR Do we lead ourselves into situations of “evil” or are we led by others? Explain your answer and use real-life examples.
