Writing with different sentence structures Grade

Remember, a sentence… expresses a complete thought has correct punctuation and capitalization contains a subject and a predicate

In order to remember what subjects and predicates are, let us sing as we watch this clip.

Let’s Practice! Read and understand pages on Subject and Predicate. Then, answer pages , exercises D and E.

Why should we know what subjects and predicates are? Does knowing the parts of a sentence (subject and predicate) help us write complete sentences? How?

PARAGRAPH 1 Ludy loves to sing. Bunny loves to perform through dancing. Everyday, Ludy practices. Bunny rehearses every weekend. They both practice seriously. They become better and better. PARAGRAPH 2 Ludy sings and Bunny dances. Ludy practices everyday but Bunny only rehearses every weekend. They both practice seriously so they become better and better.

Which of the two paragraphs was easier to read? Which has smoother flow of details?

PARAGRAPH 1 Ludy loves to sing. Bunny loves to perform through dancing. Everyday, Ludy practices. Bunny rehearses every weekend. They both practice seriously. They become better and better. PARAGRAPH 2 Ludy sings and Bunny dances. Ludy practices everyday but Bunny only rehearses every weekend. They both practice seriously so they become better and better.

Now that we can write complete sentences, the next thing we should target is making our complete sentences interesting to read.

Writers use different structures or forms of sentences so details can flow smoothly. These different structures make writing interesting for readers.

Sentence Structures: Simple sentence Compound sentence Complex sentence Compound-complex sentence

SIMPLE SENTENCECOMPOUND SENTENCE -has one subject (noun or pronoun) - has one predicate (verb) Examples: 1.John swims everyday. 2.Jenny colored her artwork. -two sentences connected by FANBOYS (For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So), or a semicolon. Examples: 1.John swims everyday, and he records his progress. 2.Jenny drew; Mark colored their artwork.

Remember! A compound sentence is made up of two sentences. There should be TWO SUBJECTS (nouns or pronouns), and TWO PREDICATES (verbs). SIMPLE SENTENCECOMPOUND SENTENCE John and Jenny swim everyday. = 2 nouns but only ONE verb John swims everyday, and Jenny records his progress. = 2 nouns and 2 verbs connected by FANBOYS

Remember! A compound sentence is made up of two sentences. There should be TWO SUBJECTS (nouns or pronouns), and TWO PREDICATES (verbs). SIMPLE SENTENCECOMPOUND SENTENCE John swims and records his progress everyday. = 2 verbs but only ONE noun John swims everyday, and Jenny records his progress. = 2 nouns and 2 verbs connected by FANBOYS

Are these simple or compound sentences? 1.Practice makes perfect. 2.Practice and hard work make someone perfect. 3. Delilah performs everyday and her mom captures her performance in video. 4. Her mom feels proud; she shows her daughter’s video to her friends. 5. Delilah prays and offers her talent to God.

Read the following sentences. What’s wrong with them? 1.Delilah performs everyday but her mom captures her performance in video. 2. Her mom feels proud or she shows her daughter’s video to her friends. How can these be improved?

What might happen if we do not use the correct connectors? Remember! Using the correct connectors (FANBOYS) helps us communicate our ideas better. Our readers or listeners will also understand the sense of our sentences immediately.

Let us Practice! Supply the most appropriate connector (For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So). 1.Maddy never stops believing in herself, _____ she never stops practicing. 2. She sometimes gets frustrated, _____ she always keeps a positive attitude. 3. Marge supports her all the way, _____ Maddy becomes more optimistic.

More Practice! Using the most appropriate connector (For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So), combine the two sentences into compound sentences. 1.Marge practices everyday. She gets better and better in swimming. 2. Maddy spends her afternoon practicing. She uses her time studying.

Why should we use variety of sentence structures when writing? In what ways can sentence structure variety help us in communicating our ideas?

Now that you have more ideas in making our written outputs more interesting through using variety of sentence structures, it is now time to apply what we know.

Writing Activity # 1 TASK: Write a thanksgiving prayer for the living signs of God’s love using variety of sentence structures and by following steps of the Writing Process. Note: Written output is an integrated activity with CLE.

There are five steps in the WRITING PROCESS. Writing is one of the important skills that can be learned and developed. Writing can be improved through a process or a step by step method.
