What is Literacy? The way reading and writing are used to communicate meaning to others.

Literacy assessment for how print is used to read books and other materials Not Yet Understands that words have meaning and that print can be read Knows where to start reading and the direction to follow Notices features of print: such as letters, words etc. Pretends to read by: Able to use eyes and hand or object to follow words in a sentence in a book.

How do children learn about the use and value of reading and writing in their classroom?

What is Reading? The ability to take meaning from print.

Reading is taught to children by:

Reading Out Loud To Them When stories are read to children, the adult points to words and says them out loud. Children learn the sounds of words and how words are used to express a thought in a sentence.

Giving children time to look at and read pictures in books everyday Children have opportunities to look at pictures in books and describe what they see.

Giving children time to look at and read pictures and notice words in books everyday: Child points to words in books

Regularly talking to children about what they see and notice in books Yu Min points to Chinese words in origami book. Gary points to and says the letter P in a story book.

Providing activities that require children to recognize and read letters in their names to find their work.

Introducing words to the children during group activities

Doing Dictation Activities With Them When the child says something, the teacher writes down what he or she says. The child sees what the teacher writes. The teacher reads out loud what the child said and points to each word. Children learn how words sound and how they are spelled. Children learn that what they say can be written and read to them.

Doing Story Retelling Activities Teachers provide activities which allow children to use pictures to retell a story that has been read to them in class. As children describe what they see in each picture from the story, the teacher sits next to the child and writes down what is said. The child sits next to the teacher so that they can see what the teacher is writing.

Children learn how reading and writing happen when they see that what they say can be can be written down and read to them.

What is Writing? The ability to use print to communicate thoughts and ideas to others.
