Converting Between the 3 Latitude and Longitude Formats

But… before we talk about Lat/Long… lets talk about Time!

Time… we understand it hour 60 minutesAn hour is made up of 60 minutes minute 60 secondsA minute is made up of 60 seconds We can do the math! What do I mean by that? ……

Time… we understand it Imagine you just hit the button of a stop watch at… 5:45 (and 30 seconds) 5 hours, 45 minutes, 30 seconds 5 hours, 45.5 minutes hours We can do the math! (at least roughly for the last one)

Lat/Long calculations are similar! There are 360 degrees in a circle (the globe) degree 60 minutesA degree is made up of 60 minutes minute 60 secondsA minute is made up of 60 seconds We can do this math too!

Remember… Three Ways To Express Latitude / Longitude (for the Same Location) hddd° mm’ ss.s” Degrees-Minutes-Seconds (Decimal Seconds) N 43° 40’ 55.8”, W 116° 17’ 14.1” hddd° mm.mmm’ Degrees-Minutes (Decimal Minutes) N 43° ’, W 116° ’ hddd.ddddd° Degrees (Decimal Degrees) N °, W °

Lat/Long Format Conversion hddd 0 mm’ ss.s”: N ’ 55.8” X W ’ 14.1” (55.8” / 60 =.93’) Do the Math! hddd 0 mm.mmm’: N ’ X W ’ (40.93’ / 60 = ) hddd.ddddd 0 : N X W
