MUSCLE TISSUE

Muscle Tissue Characteristics Contractile Made of contractile proteins Cells are called fibers

Skeletal Muscle Cells have multiple nuclei 40% of body weight Under voluntary control; attached to skeleton Striated, or banded, appearance Cells have multiple nuclei

Smooth Muscle Characteristics Not under voluntary control Found in walls of hollow organs, skin, and eyes Tapered and have no striations

Cardiac Muscle Characteristics Muscle of the heart It is not under voluntary control Striated Connected to each other via intercalated discs

Compare the muscles:

Check Your Knowledge What are muscle cells made of? PROTEIN What are muscle cells called? FIBERS What are three types of muscles? SKELETAL, SMOOTH, AND CARDIAC

More Muscle Questions… Which 2 types of muscle are involuntary? SMOOTH AND CARDIAC Which muscle type can be controlled consciously? SKELETAL Which muscle type/s have striations? SKELETAL AND CARDIAC
