1. Objectives: 1. Describe the general characteristics and functions of connective tissue 2. Name the major types of muscular tissue and relate each one to a particular organ.

2. 1. Composed of cells called muscle fibers 2. Muscle fibers contain actin and myosin- both are protein filaments whose actions cause muscle movement 3. There are 3 types of muscle tissue: a. Skeletal- called voluntary muscle b. Smooth- call involuntary muscle c. Cardiac- involuntary muscle found in the heart

4. 1. Associated with the bones of the skeleton, the heart and in the walls of the hollow organs of the body. 2. Functions include: a. Locomotion b. Maintains posture c. Produces heat d. Facial expressions e. Pumps blood f. Peristalsis (movement in the digestive tract)

5. 1. Muscle fibers (cells) long, parallel & cylindrical 2. Have many nuclei (multinucleate) A. Striations (cross stripes run perpendicular to the cells – banded): light/dark bands B. Produce voluntary movement, attached to bone, moves eyes C. Locomotion D. Produce Heat
