Respiratory System Ventilation ( breathing) Recap questions, discuss with your partner 1.How you know something is alive? 2.Why do we breathe? 3.Make a list of things we need energy for? 4. Can you write the word equation for combustion Fuel+ ______ 5. Can you write the word equation for respiration Glucose + __________ LO: explain that plants and animals respire Compare and contract combustion and respiration

Which of these organisms respire? A E D C B F ALL OF THEM! Asian fish market

Releasing energy from food This is called RESPIRATION Glucose + oxygen  carbon dioxide + water + ENERGY This reaction occurs in all living organisms

DEMO: screaming jelly baby FUEL + OXYGEN combustion + Water + CarbonDioxide ENERGY Similar Different How is combustion similar to respiration and how is it different?

Breathe in, breath out So how is breathing different to respiration. Glucose + oxygen  carbon dioxide + water + ENERGY

Rib muscles – to raise and lower the ribs Right lung Bronchioles- contain air sacs called alveoli Ribs –protect the chest Left bronchus Heart Diaphragm- muscular sheet Windpipe- carries air to the chest Ventilation (breathing) occurs in the lungs it allows useful gases to diffuse into blood and waste gases to be removed Ribs- protect the chest Windpipe- carries air to the chest Bronchioles- contain alveoli Diaphragm- muscular sheet Left Lung Ribs

Breathing is the movement of air in and out of the lungs. You can see people breathing and it’s one of the first things a doctor looks for to see if someone is alive. Respiration is a chemical reaction going on inside all living cells. It releases energy from glucose to keep the body alive. Are breathing and respiration the same thing???

Demonstrating respiration and breathing. Lungs Cells Right handside of heartLeft handside of heart Oxygen diffuses into red blood cells Pushes along Takes in oxygen Gives out carbon dioxide Red blood cells

“Double Loop” System Lungs Right side - Heart - Left side Cells of the body Head Oxygen is taken in by the cells of the body and the head and is combined with glucose to transfer energy to something useful for the body e.g. movement RESPIRATION BREATHING When the lungs takes in oxygen that is needed for respiration and takes out carbon dioxide gas

Role play questions What does the blood carry from the lungs to the cells? What does the blood carry from the cells to the lungs? Where does breathing occur in this roleplay? Where does respiration occur?

Fish Head Video Explain with reasons whether the fish is dead or alive Are the gills moving? If the fish is not breathing, why is it still moving? When would you determine when a person/animal is dead?

Breathing Respiration RED GREEN This occurs in both plants and animals? The lungs are the organs used for this? Not sure AMBER

Breathing Respiration RED GREEN When you exercise this will be increased? The amount of glucose available in the body controls the rate of which process? Not sure AMBER

Breathing Respiration RED GREEN This process brings oxygen into the body? This is the process where oxygen is used to produce energy? Not sure AMBER

Breathing Respiration RED GREEN The amount of glucose available in the body controls the rate of which process? Which of these two processes is a form of excretion for the body? Not sure AMBER

Breathing Respiration RED GREEN This is the process where oxygen is used to produce energy? During which process is carbon dioxide produced? Not sure AMBER

8B Respiration – the truth, and quite few lies True or false? 1. Respiration means breathing. 2. Respiration occurs in all body cells. 3. Respiration gives out oxygen. 4. Carbon dioxide is used up by respiration. 5. Respiration is a chemical process that releases energy. 6.Plants do not respire. FALSE TRUE FALSE TRUE FALSE

8B Respiration – the truth, and quite few lies True or false? 1. Respiration releases energy from glucose. 2. Oxygen is needed for respiration in humans. 3. We die without oxygen because we cannot respire. 4. Respiration is a bit like burning. 5. People do not respire while they are asleep. 6. The more energy we need, the less we respire. TRUE FALSE

8B Respiration and combustion Respiration and combustion - same thing? Or not? Are these statements... …only true about respiration? (R) …only true about combustion? (C) …true about respiration and combustion (R & C) Needs a high temperature(C) Gives out light(C) Happens at room temperature(R) Gives out heat(R & C) Needs enzymes to work properly(R) Uses oxygen(R & C) Gives out carbon dioxide(R & C)
