1 Humans as Organisms- Food and Digestion
LO: be able to group organs into systems -Describe the digestive and respiratory system G7 recap: Discuss and answer in your book 1. What is a cell and write down 3 examples of different types of cells? 2. What is a tissue and write down 3 examples of different tissues? 3. What is an organ and write down 3 examples of different organs? 4. What is an organ system and write down 3 examples of different organ systems? 1 volunteer

2 Organs in the body

3 Some systems in the human body
Respiratory system Circulatory system Organs work together to form organ systems Digestive system Video: whats inside Harry? Muscular system Skeletal system 18/09/2018 3

4 Why do we need a digestive system?
Digestion is the process by which larger food molecules are broken down into smaller molecules so they be absorbed and used by the body for respiration, growth and repair Oesphagus/ gullet TASK: Try to label the diagram with the organs of digestion Stomach Small intestine Large Intestine Rectum Anus Trip through digestive system video

5 Label the parts of the respiratory system:
Ribs- protect the chest Windpipe- carries air to the chest Bronchioles- contain alveoli Diaphragm- muscular sheet Label the parts of the respiratory system: Windpipe- carries air to the chest Rib muscles – to raise and lower the ribs Left Lung Left bronchus Right lung Bronchioles- contain air sacs called alveoli Ribs Heart Ribs –protect the chest A respiratory System is required to allow gas exchange (oxygen and carbon dioxide) between the blood and outside the body. RESPIRATION IS NOT THE SAME AS BREATHING!!!!!!! Diaphragm- muscular sheet

6 Questions- do not write out the question but answer in full sentences
1. Name the system which provides support for the body 2. Name 3 organs/structures which make up the circulatory system? 3. Describe the role of the nervous and muscular systems 4. Name 3 substances all cells in your body need 5. Name 2 waste products that must be removed from the all cells and the body? 6. Name 2 organs which remove waste from the body 7. Where does breathing occur? 8. Where does respiration occur?

7 Digestion True or False
We each eat about 500kg (½ ton) of food per year. We each produce 1.7 litres (3 pints) of saliva every day. Muscles contract in waves to move the food down the oesophagus. This means that food would get to a person's stomach, even if they were standing on their head. An adult stomach can hold approximately 1.5 litres (2 ½ pints) of material. The digestive system of an adult human is about 8m long. Every day 11.5 litres (20 pints) of digested food, liquids and digestive juices flow through the digestive system, but only 100mls (one sixth of a pint) is lost in faeces (poo)
