1 API Subcommittee 6 Plenary Meeting Resource Group on Materials Tim Haeberle Chairman – API SC6 Resource Group for Materials 6 February 2014

API Standard 6A 718

This update covers:  Ballot for the 3 rd Edition  Addition of high strength Alloy 718  Addition of other nickel alloy CRA’s  Addition of new etchant  Current issues

API Standard 6A 718 Ballot for the 3 rd Edition After 2 years, we have a draft of the 3 rd Edition that has just moved from the Work Groups to the parent Task Group Thanks go out to Paul Maxwell and Rashmi Bhavsar for leading the two Work Groups that have completed their tasks An alternate etchant for Alloy 718 has been added High strength 140 KSI Alloy 718 meeting the NACE HRC 40 max has been added without the need for the API funded testing The basic requirements for 5 other nickel-chromium-molybdenum precipitation hardening alloys have been added However……..

API Standard 6A 718 Ballot for the 3 rd Edition However, conflicting objectives of committee members representing mills, distributors, API 6A equipment manufacturers, non-API 6A equipment manufacturers, and end users are making it difficult to draft a document that satisfies all parties Additionally, attempts to make API 6A718 requirements unified with API 5CRA requirements have delayed progress and created new issues Remaining issues include proposed changes to the existing:  Hardness test methods  Hardness test locations  Hardness re-test requirements and optional 2nd re-test  Conversion of the Rockwell C maximum hardness limits in NACE MR0175 to Brinell hardness limits

Hardness re-test issue Retests If any hardness requirements are not met, three additional indentations shall be made in the immediate area to determine new hardness numbers. If each new hardness number meets the requirements of this International Standard, then the piece is qualified. If one or more new hardness numbers fail, then the piece is rejected. At the manufacturer’s option, the rejected piece may be qualified by performing cross-section hardness tests in accordance with b Test Location, Method and Frequency b.Cross-section hardness testing shall be performed on each QTC using the Rockwell C method per ASTM E 18 Three adjacent indentations shall be made near the surface, three adjacent indentations shall be made at ¼ thickness and three adjacent indentations at the center. All hardness indentations shall be reported. No individual hardness number may be greater than 2 HRC units above the maximum specified hardness number.

Resolution of hardness conversion issues The existing conversion from Rockwell C to Brinell in ASTM E140 for nickel alloys has been shown to be too conservative Unfortunately, the test data is not up the standards required for balloting a new conversion table for ASTM E140 API SR3 form submitted to CSOEM for approval on 1/24/14 for $35K  Covers round-robin testing of Alloy 718, Alloy 925, Alloy 935, Alloy 945, Alloy 625 Plus & Alloy 725  F6NM, CA6NM and 410 stainless steel also included to meet request from the TG for API 6A 21 st Edition  Objective is to develop data for a ballot to be submitted to ASTM Approval of the SR3 is currently pending

API Standard 6A 718 Moving forward… Proposed motion: “Motion to provide the API 6A718 TG Chairman with the option have the API Standard 6A718 3 rd Edition draft approved by the TG sent directly out for letter ballot, rather than waiting until the SC6 Summer Meeting in June to get approval”. This will speed things up, provided  We have a draft document ready to go before June  It is not deemed necessary to discuss the draft with API SC6 before the SC votes to send it out for letter ballot
