MICE Magnets Contents: Background Refurbishment Testing Installation & survey Current status Upstream beamline Open issues & concerns MICE Beamline Review, 16 th November Andy Nichols, RAL

Background The upstream comprises a triplet of small quads, Q1,2,3 and one dipole (D1) and is already designed & installed by ISIS The downstream beamline comprises two triplets of refurbished quads, (Q4,5,6) (Q7,8,9)and one dipole (D2). This is being assembled by MICE Much valuable input from the very early stages by Chris Nelson at RAL and Steve York at DL on both refurbishment and support stands Ongoing project in the MICE Hall, led by Willie Spensley

Typical Installation

Layout of MICE hall and location of Q35s Here and here Upstream BL Q1,2,3, D1) (D2, Q4,5,6 Q7,8,9)

Refurbishment Carried out in MICE hall by Eammon, Cyril, Mike, Mark What we do: Remove water manifold Split the four pole-pieces Remove coils Polish pole pieces Test coil insulation Remove/rub down old paint Clean everything Repaint Re-assemble complete Replace water manifold and flex piping to coils Prepare wiring & instrumentation for test Attach mirror plates Transport to test area

Refurbishment Typical difficulties encountered: Failed coils Damaged or non standard fluid fittings & flanges Broken pipes Missing mirror plates Other sundry parts & fasteners missing Obsolete drawings Imperial dimensions Easy to fix except failed coils – see later

Refurbishment We have to accelerate the schedule though: Need to work in parallel Re-arrange space in MICE Hall and find two more technicians – from Daresbury Lab and/or Merit, so it goes like this: Will attempt to put into effect during December Includes two crane Drivers All-purpose expert

Testing Testing can be split into two phases, both in R6 at RAL: Functional test – Martin Hughes & Paul Flower –Connect to demin supply & pump for one day –Check insulation between coils & poles –Connect to power Field map – Kevin Tilley –See Kevin’s talk

Installation & survey Q35s are assembled into two triplets, each triplet on levelled & grouted baseplate Two quads are mounted on mobile frames (for crane reasons) with suitable adjustment and kinematic bases One is on a fixed frame Everything is stable, robust and conventional Quads are finally surveyed into position w.r.t MICE datum to a level of 1mm by RAL metrology staff

Installation & Survey Trial Assembly At RAL Oct’07

Current Status Three quads are refurbished, one is in early stages of functional test Fourth quad is dismantled and pole pieces are polished Both baseplates are levelled and grouted Preparations being made for parallel refurbishment Trouble-free trial assembly of fixed stands complete Awaiting bogie frame parts for mobile stand (expected 16 th November) Two remaining mirror plates, mtg blocks & fasteners due end November Ten off manifold covers also due end November Hardware for field mapping being made now Power supplies, cooling water & connections making good progress D2 is installed, will be tested in situ in Early December orJan 10th

Upstream Beamline The upstream assembly has three small quads and one dipole Generally it is more advanced, magnets are mounted; the dipole and one quad were tested in July, other two quads were last used in 2002 (taken as OK) We have a problem though: –The amount of adjustment on the triplet stand does not allow the quads to point at the MICE target – see pictures next slide –What shall we do? –Make a new triplet stand, delivery promised for mid- December and cost of £9K We plan for success though – changeover of stand & final survey is planned by ISIS during shutdown

Upstream Beamline We’re out of adjustment here We re-make this bit Upstream end of triplet needs to go Down approx 40mm

Open issues & concerns What do we do if we don’t have enough usable coils? –Selective assembly is difficult, as things appear to have been made to fit at manufacture. New coils likely custom made and very expensive and impossible lead time anyway Do the mirror plates need to be accurately located w.r.t. the pole pieces? –They were obviously pinned on assembly in 1963, but we are now mixed up and have lost the original locations. What level of accuracy? We will never meet the schedule without parallel working on the refurbishment –To do so we need two more technicians, including one crane driver. Need help quickly! Correction coils? –Do we need them?

Open Issues & Concerns Re-worked Upstream triplet stand not delivered/installed in time? –We have to use the existing one as a fall-back – need to understand the implications for the physics
