RefWorks Create bibliography in choice of style– MLA, APA, etc. “Saves time. Awesome!” “It’s nice to keep track of resources.” “It created the bibliography for you.” “This is really unbelievable. Formatted, in order....” “Now I can spend the extra hour or two doing more meaningful things.” The Wow Factor Capture Manipulate Generate instant bibliographies Import records from library databases Link to full-text documents with the library’s link server Link to shared documents in web based file space provided by University of Wisconsin Group collections accessible on and off campus Licensed by university for use by faculty, staff and students

Beyond the Wow Factor How does RefWorks help learners? Make connections within and across disciplines Synthesize concepts into a new body of knowledge Integrate new information from a variety of sources Evaluate information for quality and appropriateness Photographers: Jeff Miller and Michael Forster Rothbart, University of Wisconsin- Madison Concept adapted from the University of Wisconsin-Madison RefWorks Working Group, 2006 A graduate course divided into teams use their shared RefWorks account to comment on the breadth of coverage, quality of the citations, and missing gaps in information. Undergrads working on a required annotated bibliography use RefWork’s notes field to comment on the quality and relevance of each article. Freshman in writing a class, gather information on a pro and con topic for debate and teach each other how to use RefWorks. A journal club uses RefWorks to gather and annotate citations, facilitating discussion and enabling participation from people who have missed meetings. Discussion summaries can be added by the club coordinator. Given time, the RefWorks account builds up a body of research across science disciplines. RefWorks search features can pull together topics to see patterns within and across disciplines. A large research lab uses RefWorks to gather and share research. Each lab member is responsible for information on a specific area of research, importing records from multiple databases with diverse coverage. The information is organized for analysis.
