THEATRUM MARCELLI By Calista Goldwasser

Location Theatrum Marcelli is located in the city of Rome just east of the Tiber River (see blue circle on map of ancient Rome)

Origin The theatre was built in 13 BCE. It was Caesar arranged for it to be built but it was not finished until Augustus was emperor. When Caesar was having it built, he dedicated it to Marcus Claudius Marcellus, his nephew, giving it its name, Theatrum Marcelli or Theatre of Marcellus.

Importance/Use of Building It is the most important theatre in all of Rome and the largest as it had a capacity of about 20,000 people. It was used for the performance of dramas and music in ancient Rome up until the 4th Century CE.
