Solving Systems of Equations Using Algebra Revisited

There Are Two Methods for Solving Algebraically Substitution: Substitute for one of the variables Elimination: Eliminate one of the variables

Substitution Must be in the form y = or x = Substitute the x or y value into the other equation and solve for the remaining variable. Finally, substitute the value found into either equation Write final answer as a coordinate point.

Elimination Equations must be in standard form ax + by = c Multiply one or both equations to get a common coefficient for one variable in both equations Add or subtract the equations to eliminate a variable. Solve for the remaining variable Substitute that value into either of the original equations Write the solution as a coordinate point

Example - Substitution 3y - 2x = 11 y + 2x = 9

Example - Elimination 3y - 2x = 11 y + 2x = 9

Shoulder partner A will solve by substitution, partner B will solve by elimination 2x – 3y = –2 4x + y = 24

Shoulder partner A will solve by elimination, partner B will solve by substitution 3x + 5y = 10 y = x + 2

Write the Equation Together Suppose you bought supplies for a party. Three rolls of streamers and 15 party hats cost $30. Later, you bought 2 rolls of streamers and 4 party hats for $11. How much did each roll of streamers cost? How much did each party hat cost? Partner A solves by substitution, partner B solves by elimination

Write the Equation Together At The Apple Pan, 4 burgers and 3 fries cost $26.50. 5 burgers and 5 fries cost $36.25. What is the cost for each item? Partner A solves by elimination, partner B solves by substitution

Solve Using Your Method of Choice On December 13th, versus the Washington Wizards, Shaquille O’Neal scored his season high in points, 40. His 40 points were scored all on free throws and two‐point baskets. He made a total of 25 shots. How many two‐points baskets did Shaq make? Define variables, write and solve algebraic equations, and state the final answer in a complete sentence.

Solve Using Your Method of Choice At McDonald’s four cheeseburgers and three medium fries have a total of 2290 calories. Six cheeseburgers and two medium fries have 2560 calories. How many calories does each item contain?
