Wasted Medicines – Insight Gathering Department of Health funded report (2010) - £300 million/year wasted on unused medicines: £110 million wasted medicine returned to pharmacies for safe disposal annually £90 million worth of unused prescription medicines are stored in people’s homes £50 million worth of NHS supplied medicines are disposed of annually by Care Homes* £1 in every £25 spent on medicines & allied products in primary and community care is unused and wasted. £1 million could potentially be saved in Merton through better medicine management, could be spent on: 33 more district nurses or 270 more hip replacements or 28 more community physiotherapists or 23 more dementia nurses £166,666 could be saved by Care Homes in Merton * Source: Evaluation of Scale, Causes and Cost of medicines wasted (DH) 2
