“Whoever is doing the most talking about the content in your class is doing the most learning.” - Dr. Ernest Mendes Speaking and Listening Comprehension and Collaboration 1. Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively. 30 seconds! Go!Go!

Before turning students loose in groups, establish group norms.

Use grouping tools and strategies for equity in quickly forming groups. INSTANT CLASSROOM

Allow for more of what students need and they will give you more of what you want. - Mendes

“What’s Up?” Please Take 8 steps in any direction. Extend your hand to the nearest person. Shake hands. This is your partner. Directions: One partner talks. The other listens for content and emotional flavor. The topic is, “What’s Up?” What’s on your mind this Saturday? You have 60 seconds. Go!Go! Partner repeats content and emotional flavor. 30 seconds. Go!Go! Switch! New topic: What kind of grouping and movement practices do you regularly facilitate?

“What’s Up?” Builds connection. Allows venting. Teaches listening skills. Changes learning states. Brings students back into the present by honoring and allowing the expression of wherever they were. Teaches paraphrasing which can transfer to course content later.
