PARTICIPATORY TEACHING STRATEGIES By: Alfredo S. Donio Jr.

What is Participatory?  Providing the opportunity for an individual to participate.

What is Teaching Strategies?  Teaching strategies refer to the structure, system, methods, techniques, procedures and processes that a teacher uses during instruction. These are strategies that the teacher employs to assist student learning.

How to Increase Student Participation?  Devote time and thought to shaping the environment and planning each class session.  Create an environment in which all participants have the opportunity to learn and in which the class explores issues and ideas in depth, from a variety of viewpoints.

 Create conditions that enable students of various learning preferences and personalities to contribute.  Encourage quiet students to speak up and, occasionally, ask the more verbose students to hold back from commenting in order to give others a chance.

1. Shaping the Environment 2. Planning 3. Listening and Responding Ways on How to Increase Student Participation?

Shaping the Environment  Reserve a classroom that will accommodate the kind of participation you have in mind.  Make clear from the beginning your expectation that students will participate.  Learn and use students’ names.

Planning  In a discussion course, assign to your students some of the responsibility for increasing participation by all.  Use a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, discussions, and small-group work.

Listening and Responding  Use verbal and non-verbal cues to encourage participation.  Give students time to think before they respond to your questions.  Listen fully to your students’ questions and answers; avoid interrupting.

 Provide specific, encouraging, varied responses.  Repeat student responses to summarize or clarify ideas.  Redirect comments and questions to other students.  Place the emphasis on student ideas.

 1. Visualization  2. Cooperative learning  3. Inquiry-based instruction  4. Differentiation  5. Technology in the classroom  6. Behavior Management Effective teaching strategies you can use to inspire your classroom practice.

 1. Visualization include using the interactive whiteboard to display photos, audio clips and videos, as well as encouraging your students to get out of their seats with classroom experiments and local field trips.  2. Cooperative learning Encourage students of mixed abilities to work together by promoting small group or whole class activities.

 3. Inquiry-based instruction Encouraging students to ask questions and investigate their own ideas helps improve their problem-solving skills as well as gain a deeper understanding of academic concepts. Both of which are important life skills.  4. Differentiation Differentiate your teaching by allocating tasks based on students’ abilities, to ensure no one gets left behind.

 5. Technology in the classroom Incorporating technology into your teaching is a great way to actively engage your students, especially as digital media surrounds young people in the 21st century.  6. Behavior Management Implementing an effective behavior management strategy is crucial to gain your students respect and ensure students have an equal chance of reaching their full potential.

 TEACHING STRATEGIES  1. Lecture  2. Case Method Providing an opportunity for students to apply what they learn in the classroom to real-life experiences has proven to be an effective way of both disseminating and integrating knowledge.

 3. Discussion.  4. Active Learning. learning environments that allow students to talk and listen, read, write, and reflect as they approach course content through problem- solving exercises, informal small groups, simulations, case studies, role playing, and other activities

 5.Cooperative Learning. Cooperative Learning is a systematic pedagogical strategy that encourages small groups of students to work together for the achievement of a common goal.  6. Integrating Technology. Integrating technology into a course curriculum when appropriate is proving to be valuable for enhancing and extending the learning experience for students.
