Presentation transcript:

Aim: How can we formulate the body paragraphs for our argumentative essay? Essential Questions: How can we apply what is on our graphic organizer to our essay? What phrases can we use to introduce the evidence in our essays?

Aim: How can we formulate the body paragraphs for our argumentative essay? In an argumentative essay, the body paragraphs must give reasons and evidence to support the claim you made in the introduction.

Aim: How can we formulate the body paragraphs for our argumentative essay? Each body paragraph must state the reason before you begin to present the evidence. Turn and Talk - Why must the reason come before the evidence?

Aim: How can we formulate the body paragraphs for our argumentative essay? In the first body paragraph, you must tell the reader where you are getting the evidence from to support your reason. Once you mention the title of the article, you do NOT have to mention it again. Let’s look at the model essay on page 126.

Aim: How can we formulate the body paragraphs for our argumentative essay? It is important to vary your sentence structure and use effective transitions so that your writing flows. When you read your paragraph aloud, it should not sound like a list of information.

SAMPLE A The world wonders are architectural marvels that must be preserved for future generations to admire. In “How to Save the Taj Mahal?” by Jefferey Bartholet, the author describes the Taj Mahal as having almost perfect symmetry. It is a 42 acre complex made of stone and semi precious stone. This demonstrates it is a very large structure that was built mostly with simple tools and it is still admired for its architecture today. Turn and Talk - What did the writer do in Sample B to make the paragraph sound better? SAMPLE B The world wonders are architectural marvels that must be preserved for future generations to admire. In “How to Save the Taj Mahal?” by Jefferey Bartholet, the author tells the reader that the Taj Mahal has almost perfect symmetry and that it was made of stone and semi precious stone. The author describes the monument as a 42 acre complex of buildings, gardens and walls. This demonstrates that the Taj Majal is admired around the world because it is a very large structure that was built mostly with simple tools. The Taj Majal’s architecture is unique and amazes people around the world. Aim: How can we formulate the body paragraphs for our argumentative essay?

CHECKLIST ❏ I have one reason in each body paragraph. ❏ I mentioned the title of the article in the first paragraph. ❏ I have at least two pieces of evidence to support each reason. ❏ For my evidence, I used direct quotes AND paraphrased. ❏ I wrote the page number in parentheses after a direct quote. ❏ I explained the evidence. ❏ I reread the paragraph to make sure it does not sound choppy. My writing flows BEAUTIFULLY!
