PowerPoint Introduction This PowerPoint sample lesson is intended as a resource for schools to be used ‘how and when’ they choose. This Year 4 lesson is planned to be set in the context of developing the theme of ‘Church community: Belief in Action’. It can be used selectively as part of ongoing work in Religious Education based on the theme of the church or as part of a theme in another area of the curriculum, eg History/Citizenship: ‘Learning about People’. There are notes on each slide for teachers’ reference. Schools may prefer to edit the slides and use photographs from their own local church and school community. The following slide gives the context of the lesson in the bigger picture. Schools may like to explore other questions in different year groups within the theme of ‘Church Community’. A PowerPoint Key Stage 1 sample lesson based on the theme of the Church can also be found on the Chester Diocesan website. Teachers may also find it helpful to refer to the Chester Diocesan document: 'How do I teach Christianity in my Church school?’ (See pages 19-20;33-36).

Context Overview Area of Content from Chester Diocesan Guidelines to be studied: ‘The Church’ Underpinning Christian Concept: ‘Church community’ Definition: (church) the whole community of believers (Christians) who worship together, sometimes called the ‘body’ or ‘bride’ of Christ. Key Questions FS/Key Stage 1: Theme: Belonging Reception:What is the church? Year 1: Level 1:Why is the church important for people? Why is meeting together important for Christians? Year 2: Level 2: How do we know when someone belongs to a Christian community? What do Christians mean when they use the word ‘church’? Key Stage 2: Theme: Community Year 3: Level 3: What does it mean for a Christian to ‘belong’ to a church community? Year 4: Level 3/4: How does ‘belonging’ to a church community affect what a believer does? How does a church community reflect biblical teaching about the ‘church’? Year 5: Level 4/5: Why are there different expressions of church community in the world? How are these similarities and differences expressed? Are they important? Year 6: Level 5How does the teaching of the church influence the everyday lives of believers? What impact do the lives of people who belong to the church community make in today’s world?

Key Stage 2 Lesson : Year 4 Theme: Church community; Belief in action Concept underpinning work : ‘Church Community’ Key Question : How does ‘belonging’ to a church community affect what people do? Lesson Objective: To understand that belonging to a church community impacts belief and this leads to action. Lesson Outcomes: (Less Able) I can identify three things a Christian might do to show they belong to a church community. (Most Pupils) I can suggest why Christians take part in certain activities and how this might influence their lifestyle. (More able) I can describe examples of Christian worship and belief in action. I can suggest reasons for the links. Teachers Notes Lesson Outline NB Teachers notes explaining how to use each slide within the context of the lesson can be found on the bottom of each slide in the notes section. These should be read before using the PowerPoint. Resources Needed Slide 4 & 5: copy of my school motto and notice board. Slides 6-9,13-17, 20,21,Large copies of photographs for each group. Slide 22: One copy for each child Diocesan Document to refer to: 'How do I teach Christianity in my church school?’ Teachers Notes

Hello, My name is Jim. I work as a Orthopaedic surgeon. As a doctor, I work with a charity to help people who in live in poorer countries who have broken bones and severe injuries. Why do I do this? God calls me to do this and has given me the skills as a doctor to help others.

My name is Kay. I am a mum of two young girls. I try to love them as God would. I spend my time meeting up with other mums and trying to help them in any way they need. Why do I do this? I do this because Jesus loves everyone and I want to show them his love.

Hi my name is Meg. I am 16. In the summer holidays I take part in a project called ‘Engage’. We all wear the same tee-shirts with this logo on to show we are working together to help others. Each day starts with us praying and worshipping together. Then we give out free cookies, garden, wash cars and offer to pray with people in the local community. Why do I this? I do this because it is a great way of sharing the love and hope that Jesus gives us. It is a way of shining light into people’s lives.

My name is Bethany. I am five years old. I go to church with my family. I love making people laugh. I enjoy dancing a lot. One dance I do is ‘Gangum style ‘to Christian music my mum plays for me. Why do I do this? I enjoy doing this to make people laugh. I think Jesus wants people to laugh.

Hello. My name is Grace. I am a nurse and work at at the hospital. I help patients after they have had brain accidents get better and return to a normal life. Why do I do this? I do this because I really believe Jesus wants us all to be whole complete people and to be able to live a full life.

Our names are Sheila and Chantal. We are volunteers in our local church cafe, held at the back of our church building. We spend time serving local people in the cafe and praying with them. Why do we do this? This is our way of showing God’s love to everyone we meet and giving them the chance to see church as a safe place where they can find peace and meet Jesus.

What else might Christians do and say? Why? Role Play

‘Whenever you show love to one of the least important of my followers you show love to me’. Matthew 25:40 The spirit produces love, joy, peace Galatians 5:23 ‘Jesus said ‘Shine your light before people’ Matthew 5:16 ‘And do not forget to do good and help one another.’ Hebrews 13:16 ‘Love your neighbour as you love yourself’ Mark 12:33b ‘ I have come in order that you might have life. Life in all its fullness’ John 10:10
