A framework of ‘big ideas’ Key Stage 1 Y1: What is the Bible about? Y1: What is the Bible about? Y2: Why is the Bible an important book? What’s the ‘big idea’ of the Bible? Christians believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God, and a guidebook for living. It is, put simply, the ‘big story’ of God and his people, starting from Creation and ending with God’s kingdom coming to earth and the renewal of all creation. Like all good books, there are unexpected twists and turns as God’s people fail to learn from their mistakes – and God puts into place the most unexpected and audacious rescue plan: one that will work, once and for all…..sending His Son Jesus as the Rescuer. And because of Jesus, every person who calls themselves a Christian now plays a part in God’s ‘big story’…. What’s the ‘big idea’ of the Bible? 13 Have a closer look Take some time to look at the examples that you have been given. Choose one to focus on. How does the unit contribute to the ‘big idea’? How does the unit plan help deliver the Core Knowledge?

How does the enquiry help deliver the Core Knowledge? engage enquire & explore evaluate express

Breaking it down into lessons How many lessons? Blocked or not? Use the success criteria Fitting in the enquiry cycle Engage tasks throughout? The whole process in each lesson? Choosing the ‘right’ questions for enquiry (but allowing time for the others? – knowing the curriculum) Evaluating key to deepening understanding Using other curriculum areas to enhance expression (and gain extra time?!) For example…. Y3 Christmas unit

Have a go! Turn one of the units into an outline of lessons you might teach Use as many or as few of the suggested ideas as you wish, but ensure that the Core Knowledge is taken into account Feedback

Help with assessment

Your RE toolkit: part 2 ‘A framework of big ideas’ booklet A Beginner’s Guide to Enquiry in RE Unit plans that fit with your long term plan Progress & attainment grids All materials on the Diocesan website

Let’s express: next steps… What are my ‘next steps’? (be realistic!) What will I need to help me? How will I do this? Are there any resource implications? Where can I go for help? www.cofeguildford.org.uk/education/our-school- services/re/guidelines www.cofeguildford.org.uk/education/our-school- services/re/guidelines Diocesan Resources Centre
