Enterprise Business Processes and Reporting (IS 6214) MBS MIMAS 19 th Jan 2011 process mapping Fergal Carton Business Information Systems

Process mapping What is process mapping? Why do we do it? How does it relate to the real world? How does it relate to the system? What is the right level of abstraction for a process?

What is process mapping? Defining what a business entity does, who is responsible, to what standard a process should be completed and how the success of a business process can be determined. The first step in gaining control over an organization is to know and understand the basic processes (Deming, 1982; Juran, 1988; Taylor, 1911)

Planning a class outing List the things that need to be done Identify who should do what Identify what information might be necessary What constitutes the completion of a step Identify what elements are repetitive Create a visual map

Sales order process Take order Dispatch goods Invoice customer Receive payment

Take order Quotation / price communicated Customer requirement confirmed –Standard weekly order – no change –Change communicated via driver –Emergency order communicated directly Check outstanding invoices for customer Acknowledgement of order receipt and delivery date Order communicated to production
