Internationalization vs. Globalization  Globalization  “The world is flat”: Thomas Friedman  “A global village”: The world everywhere is connected and exposed.  Internationalization  The understanding and exchanges of cultures and knowledge  To become good global citizens through internationalization  There is international competition to become international

3 NCKU’s Mission Statement  To preserve Tainan’s heritage as Taiwan’s cultural capital while aspires to become a full-fledged internationally renowned university, NCKU cultivates future leaders with creativity, humanism, global vision and profound social concerns, and develops transdisciplinary researches for the benefit of society and humanity.

Skills for internationalization  Foreign languages (English as the second language)  Understanding different cultures  Understanding common etiquette  Establishing international connections  Keeping abreast of international news in politics, economy or your own field

Purposes of internationalization (student mobility)  To learn the cutting-edge science, technology and scholarship.  To learn the student attitudes and other qualities of other countries (aggressive, positive, expressive and creative)  To learn and understand foreign cultures.  To facilitate international communication and establish personal contacts.  To upgrade the country’s standing in international community.  To be competitive internationally: “The World is flat” (Thomas Friedman)

The strategies for internationalization (I)  Internationalization : bidirectional -Encourage NCKU faculty and students to visit and study abroad -Encourage foreign scholars and students to study at NCKU “Brain drain” “Brain circulation” “Brain stagnation”

The strategies for internationalization (II)  Financial incentives (Scholarship, Travel support, living quarter assistance)  Campus advertisement and active recruitment  Establish sister universities to exchange faculty and students  Dual degree programs (CWRU, Southern Illinois U Carbondale, Temple, Texas Tech)  Create internationally friendly environment  Student-run group discussions to promote local- international student understanding
