3 Your Frustrations! I didn’t even do GCSEs – how can I help him? Surely she shouldn’t be going out again when she’s got exams coming up? I can’t stand the arguments and stress when I tell him exams are important and try and make him work I don’t understand all this coursework, levels and modular exams – it’s completely different from when I was at school

4 Your Frustrations! She’s always got an excuse – I don’t know what to believe She’s always panicked in exams – what can I do to help? He always leaves everything to the last minute – one moment he has all the time in the world – the next it’s all stress and stropping because it all has to be in tomorrow. There’s a million websites to help but how do you know which are any good?

Mind mapping A mind map is the easiest way to put information into your brain and to take information out of your brain. It is a creative and effective means of note-taking that literally “MAPS OUT” your thoughts. What you need to make a mind map: Blank unlined paper. Coloured pens and pencils. Your brain. Your imagination.

13 Use colours. Connect your main branches to the central image Use an image or picture for your main idea Start in the centre of the page Use one key word per line. Make your branches curved. Use images throughout.

23 Practice past questions Useful websites

24 Encourage your son/daughter to find out precisely what each paper covers; what equipment/materials are allowed topics covered how marks are allocated how time should be allocated

Parent support  Show interest – but not too Big Brotherish! Strike a balance.  Communicate with your child about school. This includes talking to them about their friends, activities, teachers, and work.  A stressful time.

26  A suitable learning environment.  Be around as a 'feeding and watering station' – feed your child lots of healthy food and drink lots of water.  The importance of sleep.  Ensure that your son or daughter has some time away from their studies. It’s also important that they take regular breaks during the study periods.

 Know your son or daughter's mock exam and revision timetable. Know exactly the date, time and location for each exam.  See the mocks as valuable learning experiences. Expect to achieve their target grade or one below.  Make sure that your child is using the internet to study and not as a resource to give the appearance of study!  Help them get organized – notes, folders, revision timetable, revision materials  Counter the myth that there is no use revising for the mocks everything will be forgotten by June.
