Appendix Removal Rong Li

What is appendix? Why does appendix need to be removed? How to remove appendix? What are consequences of appendix removal?

What is appendix? The appendix is 3-6 inch long tubelike structure that projects from the junction of the small and large intestines.

Why does appendix need to be removed? appendicitis ---- acute or subacute process that causes the lumen of the appendix to become obstructed with buildup of pressure and eventual rupture. Appendix is an degenerated organ.

How to remove appendix? preparation patientsurgeon Operating room Cutting the body Removing the appendix Close the body Stop blooding

Appendix removal in detail Preparation –Patient Shave the body hair. Restrict food intake – empty the stomach for anesthetic purpose. –Surgeon, nurser Washing hands. Wearing sterilized uniform, sterilized rubber gloves. –Operating room Surgical kit Procedure –Detail steps for appendix removal

Details of Surgical procedure 1.The body lays on a table, the body skin is sterilized and then a white sheet with a hole covers the body, the hole is the position for operating. 2.Make a short incision with a knife through the skin and underlying fat where the appendix is underneath. 3.Make a short incision with a knife on aponeurosis, further opening by using classical muscle splitting technique via homestat, until the peritoneum is visulized.

Surgical procedure details(Cont.) 4.Open peritoneum with a small incision by using a knife. 5.Use hand-held retractor to widened the incision to expose the cecal area. 6.Find the appendix carefully, inspect it, cross-clamped with hemostats, two ties are placed on the area of crushed appendix and then remove it.

Surgical procedure details(Cont.) 7.After inspecting bleeding, aponeurosis are reapproximated. 8.Close the subcutaneous tissue. 9.Close the skin with staples.

What are consequences of appendix removal? NO
