Donning PPE (with PAPR)

The emerging EBOLA preparedness is new for our nation and our organizations. Information changes rapidly, sometimes daily based on new findings. This information is current as of 10/22/14 and is based on CDC recommendations/guidelines. Products used in the pictures may vary from products that are available at your facility based on supplier. The principles remain the same. Consult your Infection Prevention Specialist or the Clinical Nurse Educator at your facility for further guidance or for any questions you may have.

Will need 2 people for donning. 1 associate trained to observe who will complete the checklist and read aloud each step of the procedure Go to bathroom Empty pockets Change into surgical scrubs Remove all unnecessary items (jewelry, pager, phones) No food/gum in mouth Put on bouffant cap/surgical cap Tie back hair and pin up off shoulders Wash hands Donning will occur in the hallway and never in the anteroom. Inspect all PPE for flaws. Prep

Don Surgical Cap/Bouffant

Gloves # 1 Put on first pair of nitrile gloves

Boot Covers #1 Boot covers as high as they go

White coverall Zipper goes in the front Tape the front neck gap with Transpore™ tape Making a tab on the end of tape for easy removal

Boot Covers #2 Pull 2 nd pair of boot covers over the white coverall. Our coveralls have open feet so the 2 nd boot cover adds another layer of protection to this part of the body.

Blue Impervious Gown The opening goes to the back and tie at the side

Put on PAPR PAPR is donned over the blue gown to insure proper air flow Be sure the hood extends to the shoulders and fully covers the neck. Be sure the hood covers all of the hair and ears, and that it extends past the neck to the shoulders. Extra care is needed to ensure skin does not become exposed with movement while wearing a PAPR – if this is not possible, do not enter into the patient room

Gloves #2 Over the cuffs of the blue impervious gown.

Verification The trained observer should complete the following prior to allowing the donned associate to enter the room: Verify completion of donning checklist Ensure there are no breaks or exposed skin Ensure there is a sufficient range of motion for the associate to perform their job. Extend arms, bend at the waist

Bleach Wipes Wipe gloves with bleach wipes and place cloth in the garbage. Allow for gloves to dry before patient contact.
