Donning PPE (with N95) Level 2 12-22-14

The emerging EBOLA preparedness is new for our nation and our organizations. Information changes rapidly, sometimes daily based on new findings. This information is current as of 12/22/14 and is based on CDC recommendations/guidelines. Products used in the pictures are based on the Medline Level 2 kits. Your products may differ based on your facility. The principles remain the same. Consult your Infection Prevention Specialist or the Clinical Nurse Educator at your facility for further guidance or for any questions you may have. Introduction

Preparation Change into clean surgical scrubs or provided disposable garments and dedicated washable footwear, such as plastic or rubber materials, in a suitable clean area. You will wear your own socks and underwear Ensure that your nails are no longer than a quarter of an inch so they do not puncture the gloves. No personal items (e.g., jewelry, watches, cell phones, pagers, pens) should be brought into the patient room. Empty your pockets. Tie back hair and pin up off shoulders.

Go to the bathroom before donning PPE. Hydrate by drinking 6-8 oz. of a non-caffeinated drink No food/gum in mouth Ensure all PPE is correct size for associate Donning will occur in the designated donning area Will need 2 people for donning 1 associate trained to observe who will complete the checklist and read aloud each step of the procedure Both should inspect all PPE for flaws Preparation

Perform hand hygiene Don bouffant/shower cap

Put on gloves, pull cuffs up to cover wrists. Gloves should be a snug fit. ( actual appearance of gloves may differ by facility )

Put on white coverall with hood and feet. (Can place a large paperclip on the zipper to aid in zipping and unzipping.) Do not pull attached hood over head until N95 is applied.

Put on boot covers over attached feet of coverall. Sit while applying boot covers to reduce risk of falling.

N95 use OSHA respiratory medical evaluation and fit testing through Associate Health must be done prior to attempting to use an N95. Associate must have evidence of completed fit testing and know what size N95 and model they are assigned to wear.

Apply N95 Mask Straps should be placed as shown. Be sure to perform seal check.

Coverall hood Pull attached hood over head. Secure elastic around face, careful not to obstruct vision. Peel off adhesive backing, if present, and pat down over zipper from neck to groin.

If coverall hood will obstruct vision once pulled up, then have trained observer tuck the hood down behind the collar of the coverall as shown. An alternate detached hood will be donned at this point

Put on a single-use disposable fluid resistant or impermeable apron or gown that covers the torso to the level of the mid-calf.

Apply outer gloves Should be slightly larger than first pair. Pull up to cover wrist of coverall. Have trained observer blouse sleeves of coverall over the gloves.

Face Shield Coverall hood is underneath the face shield to protect forehead from being exposed. Sanitize gloved hands prior to entering patient care area.

Verification The trained observer should complete the following prior to allowing the donned associate to enter the room: Ensure there are no breaks or exposed skin Ensure there is a sufficient range of motion for the associate to perform their job.
