EAP Overview The goal of the Early Assessment Program is to help California high school graduates enter the CSU fully prepared for college-level work.

Math and English Proficiency Rates  About 35% of first-time freshmen enter the CSU without demonstrating proficiency in mathematics.  About 45% of first-time freshmen enter the CSU without demonstrating proficiency in English.  About 55% of first-time freshmen enter the CSU needing remediation in at least one subject. Approximate Percent of Regularly Admitted Freshmen in Remedial Mathematics and English English Only 20% Math Only 10% Both 25%

Components of the EAP 1.11 th grade testing 2.Professional development for teachers 3.Supplemental preparation for students The CSU Early Assessment Program is comprised of three core components which provide a comprehensive solution for helping students become ready for college.

Professional Development for Teachers  Expository Reading and Writing Course  Emphasizes in-depth study of expository, analytical, and argumentative writing.  Deepens students’ critical reading, writing, and thinking skills.  Approved as a “b” course for juniors and seniors in the “a-g” college preparation sequence.  Reading Institutes for Academic Preparation  Helps teachers across the curriculum at every grade level become effective literacy instructors in their content areas.  Mathematics Program  Helps teachers recognize and create cognitively complex, multi-step problems that require students to develop creative approaches to problem solving

Calibrated Peer Review –Program Overview  Offers a free online EPT essay writing tool for 11 th and 12 th grade students  High school teachers sign up on the English Success website  Students respond to three retired EPT prompts  A CSU English lecturer provides program guidance and support –Impact  Over 75 teachers have participated.  Testimonial “I got a note recently from one of last year's seniors. He's in the non- remedial freshman English class at one of the UC's. He scored the highest grade in his section on an essay similar to the prompts we did for your online EPT essay program. –Students are encouraged to create a roadmap to receive personalized advice about how to best meet the ELM and EPT Requirements –The first step requires students to answer 1-5 questions –The questioning process determines what advice the student will be given –Over 30 personalized roadmaps can be generated depending on student responses Personalized Roadmap

–The roadmap informs students of the series of steps that they should take to become ready for the CSU –All information is provided via customized checklists that students can update in real time –The roadmap can be printed –All items are linked to other pages that provide further detail Personalized Roadmap

Online Tools – English and Math Test Prep MATH –Online practice multiple choice tests (free) –ALEKS intelligent tutor online personalized math tutorial ($35) ENGLISH –Online practice multiple choice tests with personalized feedback (free) –Calibrated Peer Review online essay writing tool (free)

ALEKS: Intelligent Math Tutoring ALEKS is an online tutorial that helps students prepare for the Entry Level Math (ELM) Exam  It costs $35 through the CSU Math Success website. (Fee waivers are available).  Students work at their own pace  Students work at their own pace and track their progress.  A guided ALEKS course is available for “Conditionally Ready” students who are not taking math in their senior year. Passing this course fulfills the CSU math placement requirement.

 To motivate juniors of the importance of participating in the EAP  To encourage juniors to submit their address so we can alert them when their EAP scores are available online 11th Grade Portal Purpose

Online EAP Status Check  Students can look up their EAP mathematics and English status online at this website.  Students then receive personalized advice for fulfilling the CSU math and English placement requirements in the most efficient way.

What Next? 1.Advise your juniors to take the EAP English and mathematics tests in the spring. 2.Have your juniors sign up at the Junior Portal for EAP reminders. 3.Connect your seniors to the appropriate resources, especially senior year mathematics classes for Conditionally Ready students. 4.Encourage all students to visit the CSU Math and English Success websites and create roadmaps to readiness.
