What will you find in databases? Information about… books, book chapters working papers articles from proceedings professional magazine articles academic journal articles Instruments, tests technical reports dissertations

CITATION/ RECORD ABSTRACT FULLTEXT basic publication information for indexed documents (author, title, date and publication name) basic publication information for book, video, journal subscription – and location in library brief summaries of indexed documents online copies of the text of indexed documents Information in Databases When you search an index,you will only find out about documents from the publications the index producer chooses to index. When you search a library catalog, you will find items owned by the library or libraries.

How do you find things in the library? 1. Go to Hawaii Voyager Library Catalog at 2. Select Basic Search to find a known item. Title browse, author browse, journal title browse 3. Select Guided Search to find books about a topic (Think broadly when choosing search terms) 4. Remember: look for journal articles in an INDEX - not the library catalog! Want books pulled and held for you? Use the Get this item link and choose the hold or transfer option. Pick up is the next day. What more books like the one you just found? Click on a subject heading to bring you to other books on the same topic. Or use part of the Subject Heading to launch a new search. Want a book that’s checked out? Recall the book, or get a copy from another UH library using the Get this item link. BRIGHT IDEAS

How do you find journals through the library? 1. Go to Select Electronic Journals. Search orhttp://library.manoa.hawaii.edu/ browse by subject. 2. Go to Hawaii Voyager Library Catalog at Select Basic Search, search by Journal Title begins with… Type the title of the journal in the search box – if it begins with a “the”, drop it! 3. Ask for help if you don’t understand what you find. Remember: look for journal articles in an INDEX - not the library catalog! What if the Library does not own the journal? (1)Interlibrary Loan (ILL) the article at. or use the Find It button through a database like Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts to place your ILL request.. BRIGHT IDEAS

How do you find working papers?...conference proceedings? 1. Go to Hawaii Voyager Library Catalog at 2. Use keyword searching for phrases. 3. Can’t find it? Try a general web search – they may be freely available online. Or use ILL for individual papers from conference proceedings and working papers series. Looking for dissertations/theses in the library catalog (Hawaii Voyager)? Do a keyword search by “thes?s and [any word]” Looking for the fulltext of a dissertation/thesis published after 1996? Search the Dissertations & Theses database thru e-Resources. BRIGHT IDEAS

How do you find journal articles on your topic? 1. Go to the UH Manoa Library’s homepage at 2. Choose Browse by Subject 3. Choose an index/database to search, and start a search session. 4. Use your keywords to start, and learn what works from your results. 5. Use the “find it” button if the fulltext of the article is not available in the index/database. Is it a journal article? Try the button. Is it something else? Search the library catalog. Is it an ERIC document? Use the ED number to find it in microfiche OR choose full-text linking (post 1993). BRIGHT IDEAS

If UH doesn’t have the document you need? 1. Fill out an InterLibrary Loan form at 2. Request it directly from a database like Worldcat (for books). 3. Request it directly from a database like LLBA with 4. Contact author of document directly. Watch account for status of request. Login to ILL to check on status of request. OR them at BRIGHT IDEAS
