Downtown Campus Biology Downtown Campus Biology Our textbook is the 11 th edition of “Essentials of Human Anatomy and Physiology” by Marieb An interactive CD comes with the book; it is optional Textbooks are available for use in the BLC and in the Downtown Campus Library.

Downtown Campus Biology Downtown Campus Biology The course description is located on page 2 of your syllabus. There are 14 lessons; the first and last consist of 2 chapters Each lesson correlates to chapter in your textbook. There is an test at the end of each lesson. Keep track of your scores on page 3 of the syllabus

Downtown Campus Biology Downtown Campus Biology Tests are 50 questions: And are worth 50 points Tests consist of:  multiple choice questions  structure and function identification on models and diagrams

Downtown Campus Biology Downtown Campus Biology Test questions come from: Textbook chapters Online quizzes Worksheets BLC models and ADAM software Laboratory exercises

Downtown Campus Biology Downtown Campus Biology Your points earned for a lesson is the sum of your test points plus 20 for having completed the lab. Divide this number by 70 and multiply by 100 to get the percentage point for each lesson. 90’s are A’s 80’s are B’s 70’s are C’s 60’s are D’s

Downtown Campus Biology Downtown Campus Biology The total number of points for the entire course is 980. [An additional 78 bonus points may be earned.] Your grade in the class depends on the total number of points that you accumulate on your labs and tests.

Downtown Campus Biology Downtown Campus Biology There is one retake of a test allowed. The retake may be done once all lesson tests have been completed. You must wait at least one day to retake a test and you must tell the BLC staff that it is a retake or you will not receive a grade on the retake. There is an optional final exam. You can not retake the final.

Downtown Campus Biology Downtown Campus Biology You will take your tests in the BLC testing room. Bring all your belongings up to the front desk and ask for a test when you are prepared. Tests and the final must be obtained from the front desk at least an hour before the BLC closes that day.

Downtown Campus Biology Downtown Campus Biology You will be given your Lesson 1 worksheets today. You will need to print all of the rest of the worksheets. The worksheets are word files so that you may manipulate them if you wish. You must have your worksheets completed and signed off before you take the test for that lesson.

Downtown Campus Biology Downtown Campus Biology It is your responsibility to stay on track. You should average 1 lesson per week. It is your responsibility to withdraw yourself from the class if you get too far behind.

Downtown Campus Biology Downtown Campus Biology To be successful in this class, it will require: 12 to 18 hours of your time per week. Science courses cover a large amount of material and are generally more time consuming than non-science courses.

Downtown Campus Biology Downtown Campus Biology Incomplete (I) grades are rarely given in this course. See page 4 of the syllabus for qualifying circumstances, like being on track up until the end of the semester.

Downtown Campus Biology Downtown Campus Biology If you choose to withdraw from the class, you must initiate that process. The deadline for student withdrawals is on your syllabus.

Downtown Campus Biology Downtown Campus Biology As a student of Pima Community College you now have a MyPima account. You should only use this account to correspond with your instructor. If it is not activated, please activate it now at If you are already activated please send your instructor an to say hi. or (Please put BIO 160 in the subject box for all of your s to your instructor.)

Downtown Campus Biology Downtown Campus Biology Your instructor will communicate to you using Pima . You will need to use your Pima to communicate with your instructor; mail from all other domains may be sent to spam. You should check your Pima account at least twice a week.

Downtown Campus Biology Downtown Campus Biology The class conduct policy is on page 5. No food or drink allowed in the BLC (you shouldn’t be putting anything in your mouth in a lab) No cell phone talking in lab. No children, friends, family, or pets allowed in BLC (insurance issues) Disruptive behavior is not tolerated. Be nice to your fellow students and the staff.

Downtown Campus Biology Downtown Campus Biology Legal Compliance Statements and information regarding them are located on page 5 of your syllabus.

Downtown Campus Biology Downtown Campus Biology Cheating will not be tolerated. If you are caught cheating on a test, you will receive a zero on that test, and you may receive an F in the class.

Downtown Campus Biology Downtown Campus Biology We will use many anatomical models in this class. They are located on shelves on the north side of the lab (by the windows)

Downtown Campus Biology Downtown Campus Biology We also will use kits which are located in drawers below the models on the north side. Take a walk now and locate a heart model, a brain model, and kit 111 (the drawers are numbered) Open kit 111 to find out what it is.

Downtown Campus Biology Downtown Campus Biology It is now time to fill in your agreement form. It is the last page of your syllabus. You are agreeing that you: 1.read the syllabus; 2.understand the BLC policies; 3.will receive 0 points for any coursework that you have not completed for the lessons covered by a deadline once that deadline passes; 4.will check your MyPima twice a week; 5.understand that this is a self-paced class and the responsibility for staying on track rests with you. Go to the next slide to find out where you get the “secret code”.

Downtown Campus Biology Downtown Campus Biology We need some information from you. If you have not already done so, please fill in and submit this online form.online form When you submit this online form you will be given a “secret code” which you need to write down in the agreement form.
