ART AND LITERACY what’s the connection?

What is literacy? The ability to read, write, visually represent, and use numeracy, to handle information, express ideas and opinions, make decisions, and solve problems.

DANCE AS A MEANS TO LITERACY OUTCOMES Dance can pair with other subject areas. Dance activities help students develop problem-solving skills. Dance allows students to recall, respond, and reflect. Dance provides an arena in which personal creative style is developed.

Two areas come together. Dance can pair with other subject areas. Pairing with subjects such as math, science, and history, allows for crossover skill and literacy acquisition.

Learning is solving. Dance activities help students develop problem-solving skills. Both individual and group projects will aid in allowing students to code and encode forms through which meaning is conveyed.

Revisiting the three “R”s. Dance allows students to recall, respond, and reflect. By being involved in the dancemaking, students will understand sequencing firsthand.

Celebrate uniqueness. Dance provides an arena in which personal creative style is developed. Each student has a unique movement style that can be fostered within the dance environment.
