Psycholinguistics Overview: Course Requirements and Syllabus

Psycholinguistics  is a marriage of psychology and linguistics.  Linguistics studies language as a formal system –how is language structured? What are rules for organizing sounds into words, words into sentences? Its three main branches are phonology, semantics, and morphology.

 Psycholinguistics is the study of language behavior: how people learn and use language to communicate ideas. Central topics: how is language perceived, represented, understood, and remembered in the mind and brain?  It adopts an experimental approach.

Evaluation and Grading  Class participation: counting as 20% of your grade.  One midterm essay (open book): 40% of your grade. (The midterm essay will be written during the class. Topics of 3 possible essays will be announced in advance; you will need to prepare for all of them, since you won't know which one will be actually chosen by the lecturer.)  One term paper: 40%. (Topics of 5 possible essays will be announced; you will need to choose 1 and write a paper of 4-5 pages.)
