Population data Russia had approximately 145 million inhabitants, roughly 103 million in the European part, and 42 million in the Asian part. Russia’s area is about 17 million square kilometers. It remains the largest country in the world. Its population is predominantly urban. Life expectancy at birth: total population: years male: years female: 74.1 years

Population data In 2006 the average nominal wages in Russia are about 280 EUR and in St. Petersburg are about 350 EUR. In St. Petersburg the highest level of nominal wages is in the financial sector (about 1000 EUR) and the lowest one in the pre-school education sector (about 250 EUR). The basket of consumer goods in St. Petersburg - about 160 EUR.

Education The portion of people with higher education has risen due to the decrease of the portion of people with basic and incomplete secondary education, as well as general secondary education per cent of the citizens have the higher/incomplete higher education - 30 per cent have secondary specialized/technical education - 28 per cent have basic secondary education

Over 50 movie theaters, including 40 public movie theaters.

St. Petersburg – a cultural center Libraries About 1,800, including –76 university libraries, –750 school libraries. –190 national public libraries. Among these, the following are the oldest libraries of the country: –The Library of the Academy of Science, –The Russian National Library, –The St. Petersburg National Theater Library. Libraries of significance for the whole of Russia: –The Library of the Academy of Arts, –The Central Agricultural Library, –The Central Scientific and Technical Library, –The Naval Library, –The Pan-Russian Geological Library

Sports In St. Petersburg, 72,000 are involved in sports activities, among these 68,000 are children and teenagers. One hundred twenty-six sports are cultivated in the city, including 51 kinds that are part of the Olympics. Twenty-four sports teems from St. Petersburg participate in championships of Russia.

Sports complexes 3,675 sports facilities of various kinds, including: –38 stadiums with bleachers; –8 sports halls with ice rinks; –69 covered swimming pools; –44 skiing resorts; –1,209 sports halls; –160 soccer fields, and 4 soccer maneges; –8 yacht clubs; –62 tennis courts –46 bowling alleys –2 golf clubs among these the largest sports arenas of Russia, such as –The S. Kirov Stadium –The Yubilejny Sports Hall –The Zenit Sports Games Hall –The Ledovy Dvorets Sports and Show Hall –The Governor's Tennis Center on Krestovsky Island

Sports organizations and institutions 2 Olympic reserve schools 4 schools of the highest sports mastering 98 youth sports schools over 90 federation on various kinds of sports the potential of scientific staffing is represented by three sports educational institutions: –The Lesgaft Academy of Physical Culture (one of the oldest in the world) –The Military Institute of Physical Culture –The R&D Institute of Physical Culture.
