What is an operating system? Allows you to interact with the computer hardware Provides Screen Control Keyboard and pointer input Interfacing with peripherals System Utilities

What are examples? Text Only MS-DOS UNIX/LINUX Graphical Windows3.x, Windows 9x (ME), Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows CE MacOS UNIX/LINUX with KDE, GNOME or X- Windows BEOS, OS/2, NEXT, Palm, etc.

Why so many choices Built in functionality Stability Application Availability Hardware Driver Support Networkable, File Sharing Security

Windows 9x Includes Windows 95, 98 and ME Predominant player in OS Market especially for homes Easiest platform for Intel systems Fairly Stable Wide Driver Support Common User Interface (CUA) Not Secure

File Management By default files go in the My Documents Folder There is often a desktop shortcut for this folder Can create sub-folders for better organization Should backup important files Easy way is to copy to a floppy

Disk Drive Letters Drives A and B Floppy Diskette Drives 5.25 and 3.5 Drives C-Z Hard Drives (Fixed Disk) CD, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD Removable (Iomega Zip) Network Drives

Moving/Copying a file Open 2 My Computer Windows, or use Windows Explorer Drag file from original location to new location When going between disks default is copy, when working on a single disk default is move (Right Drag to Change)

Creating a Folder Good way to better organize your stuff From Windows Right Click Select New From Software (File | Open) Click on New Folder Icon Name Folder

Formatting Disks All disks must be formatted Most floppy disks come pre-formatted If you must format Right click on Drive Icon Choose Format On new disks use Full To clean a disk completely use Quick Can also label disk

Working with removable media Never remove media when lights are flashing Always remove media before turning system off (can cause boot problems) Treat media carefully (Do not fold, bend spindle or mutilate)

Deleting a file Click on file and press Drag file to Recycle Bin To recover a deleted file, you can go to the Recycle Bin and remove them Don’t forget to empty the Recycle Bin!

Finding stuff you’ve lost An invaluable tool Find option on the Start menu Select Files or Folders

Editing Digital Photos We use PaintShop Pro ($100) available at Files must be saved as JPG or GIF for the Internet (also works with most software programs) File Size should be as small as possible May need to Copy useful part of the photo

Working with Multiple Programs Manually switch between programs using task bar Manually resize programs Cascade or Tile Programs (Rt. Click on task bar)
