East Meets West Facts And Innovation Perspective of education in China

A look into the classroom

Student life in China  Classes through the day  Most students take classes in holidays and weekends  Lectures; no discussion  Courses are mandatory. No selection.  Learn only what will be tested in the Entrance Examination  Poor extracurricular activities

Outcome of this education  Multiple choices, short answers and calculations: require huge amount work of reciting and practicing  No paper is done: poor comprehension and analyzing ability.

National Entrance Examination  Admission only by scores  Craze for famous colleges  Exam format: Multiple choices and short answers; no papers  Mathematics: focus on calculation  History, politics, literature, English: rote learning

Facts and Figures  Average high school size: 1093 (yr.2002)  Number of high school students: 16,838,105  7.23 million students took national exam  3.8 million (53%) of who are admitted  67.7% of students have less than 7 hours sleep per day  41.6% have less than 0.5 hours free time; 20% have no free time at all!!

Percentage of students who continue education in high school

Chinese students are more students than scholars

But will the western method of admission really survive on the land of China?

Independent admission  Similar process as American admission  Space for independent admission is limited: 5% of total freshman seats generally  #App>>#Admit --Tests  Hidden and unpublic -- Cheating

Conclusion  Entrance Examination: So far the best way  We need a fairer environment to westernize the admission and education
